On June 16th this year we bought a used caravan from a local reputable dealer.

The van is a 1998 Swift challenger 400 2 berth, when we went away last week we thought we would try the heating as it had dropped a bit cold.

When I tried to turn on the fire a Carver 3600, with the electric element at the back, I noticed that the switch on the fire was not even connected so I pulled off the front and found that it was broken at the switch, had loose wires where I think a battery must fit, and enough dog hairs to fill a carrier bag.

The only part of the heating that worked was the blown air thing.

Am I wrong in thinking that this fire and all gas appliances should have been checked on the pre delivery inspection. All they did was explain that this switch worked that etc etc!

Also the van was not sold as seen either, does anyone know how much warranty if any you are supposed to get?

As they have sent us a letter saying we have to pay, as the warranty has run out.

The bill of sale does not state how long the warranty was for, but we have only had the van 2 months.

The salesman also told us that it would be valeted, and one of the bed slats would be replaced, which never happened.

All advise much appreciated.

I would start by sending a letter of complaint to the company director and send a copy of that letter to your local Trading Standards office.  Also let the caravan dealer know you have sent a copy to trading standards.

If they then don't deal with your complaint to your satisfaction then trading standards will get involved and help you to sort it out.

Good luck, I have been on the wrong end of this situation before and I really feel for you.

Bit late now but the CC have this rather excellent information booklet on buying a second hand van.  Detailing what to look out for and the pitfalls.

It says that the terms of the Warrantee if provided should be written on the bill of sale.

I personaly on the first instance would visit the salesman and talk face to face about the jobs not completed, obviuosly express that youve not noticed the incompte jobs such as fire as it wasnt needed.

at this point it can also be discused about the warrenty issue, along with naytest that you feel wernt done.and then if nothing is resolved by a calm chat ask about company compliants procedure's.verbal is always best first option followed by written complaint then follwed by trading standards procedure's

the only problem you have is maybe prooving the said items left depot in that condition.

best of luck and keep us informed..oh maybe a mention of dealer with a plus or negative depending on what way it goes once its all sorted

I would have a word with the dealer first and get them to rectify the faults that they should have rectified before you got it. It is always useful to take some pictures of any faults if possible as this can help if you need to take it further with trading standards.

I hope your dealer is reputable enough to take on board the problems you have found and correct them so you don't have to 'name and shame' them here, only 'name and praise'!
