Hello there, we are brand new to caravaning and have just purchased a 2004 Adria Altea 502dk. We have two young children and thought that the layout etc would suit us really well. Our only slight concern was that the door is on the drivers side. Does this pose much of a problem on UK sites? Have we made a good choice with this van? Also there is not a shower head on the tap in the shower room but there is a shower tray etc so would this be easy to adapt? Really welcome any advice from those more experienced!

Thanks.

We have a 2005 Altea 502DK with the door on the right. Yes you have made a good choice - we have been very pleased with ours. We haven't had any problems at all with the door and as it is our first van we knew nothing different. Can't help regarding the shower head though, we haven't used our shower. Hope someone else can help.

Hi Suzie and welcome.
Congrats on your purchase of the Adria. The fact the door is on the opposite side gets mixed comments. One of the main concerns is that should you choose to stop for a brew in a lay-by mid-route, your entry to the van is road side and nearest the traffic. Might be a concern with children, but so long as your sensible where you stop, then shouldn't be a problem for you.
Some club sites are strict with van orientation when using an awning, so with the door on the opposite side you might get asked to pitch back to front in relation to other vans (I've seen it insisted upon a few times). That said, I've seen quite a few vans over the past few days with the doors on the 'european side', so just be aware of it.
As for the shower head, whether it can be adapted relies on the brand of tap. To be honest though, your water heater tank might only hold enough for a 'quick squirt' and in practice, you'll probably find you don't use it. Would be worth consulting your dealers workshop.

Happy 'vanning.

Thank you both so much for replying, we do feel that we have made a good but it's just with it being our first van I'm feeling the need for some reassurance!! We have a motor mover with the van so hopefully that will help us on the sites where we have to turn the van the opposite way to everyone else. My friend recommended me to this site and it's amazing what you learn - we'll be experts in no time!! Thanks again (any other general tips would be most welcome!)

I would disagree with the previous comment about on some club sites you may be asked to pitch "differently".

We always use CC Sites and never been asked to pitch"differently".

The spacing on CC Sites ensures you are never "ontop" of your neighbours.

Instead of looking at our car from their awning our neighbours have the pleasure of looking at us in our awning!

The only problem is as stated when in laybys etc, commonsense will overcome that problem.

Don't forget all of the British vans touring Europe have their doors on the wrongside!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of caravanning and I hope you have many years pleasure out of it. Don't worry about the door being on the European side. We have a 2007 Caravelair which is a lovely 4 berth fixed bed and that has the door on the European side. The standard of build quality of European vans exceeds that of British vans and ours is so solid. We have a shower head and we do use the shower but we have wallboard rather than plastic linings.

As a previous commentator said, the doors on British vans are on the "wrong"side in Europe but they don't make a song and dance about it. We use CC and private sites and have never had any bother.

I really hope you don't have any issues on this, but I only mentioned it from experience when my in-laws were asked to pitch their Adria 'back-to-front' when we were on site together. To clarify though, although they've been asked to do so on two occassions, it's only been when they've used the full awning ...

Have you checked out the weight of your van versus the weight of your car?  I only ask because AFAIK the fully laden weight of your van is 1200 kg and the Civics are not heavy cars, with many being lighter than this?  Do you know your van's fully laden weight and your car's kerbweight and noseweight?

Hi Ali,
Thanks for your message. A friend had already advised us to do a towing compatibility test before securing the caravan with a deposit on whattowcar.com which came out very well with the towing capability coming out as 5 out of 5 stars. As our Honda is the 2.2CDTi I think that helps? This caravaning lark is an absolute minefield!! We're definitely learning something new every day! I must say that this website is worth it's weight in gold, somebody somewhere always seems to have an answer to any query - it's great!

Thanks again.

Be carful with towing as your van is about 1200 kg and you can only tow 1066 kg acording to Honda at the 85% weight. m as you are new to caravaning you dont take the total towing weight of your vehicle on the 85% or the towing weight e.g. 1066 kg that not to say that you cannot tow with it just be carefull. Other will proble be able to explain it better than I can.

Hiya, I can't find your car's kerbweight online but ideally as beginners you don't want to be towing over 85% as Sennen has said above.  Your van is very likely nearer 100% at 1200 kg.  I would say it is likely not a very good match for a beginner but would need to know your kerbweight to be able to give you an accurate percentage.

Hi Ali, thanks for your message.

The printout we got does say that the percentage between loaded caravan and kerbweight tow car is 84% based on 1200kg.

According to the Caravan Club road test about 1180kg is the 85% match for a 2006 Civic 2.2CDTi.  Our 56 plate Civic towed a 1250 kg Bailey Ranger (90% match) far better than our earlier car a 05 plate Grand Scenic (80% match).

The Civic 2.2 is a fantastic towcar, I had one for 35000 miles and I towed about 4000 miles in one so I actually have direct experience of the car.

CAN PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW THE CARS IN QUESTION PLEASE STOP POSTING SCAREMONGERING POSTS TAKING KERB AND TOW WEIGHTS FROM UNRELIABLE 3RD PARTY WEBSITES.  IF YOU KNOW THE FACTS THEN POST, IF NOT DON'T CONFUSE.

PS The above comment is meant to be shouting
