Thank you very much for some good positive words! Very much appreciated but at the same time we do not want to be making a mistake in buying this caravan as we still have time to pull out if we need to and lose a £300 deposit if there would be a major problem in towing etc. We feel that we have taken advice and checked weights etc sufficiently. Also, although this is our first caravan my husband has lots of experience in towing various trailers/machinery etc through his work so he is not new to towing, just new to towing a house on wheels!

That was totally uncalled for Zafirai, if you read my posts you will see I have asked the OP if they have checked their kerbweight, nothing more nothing less.  I have also said each and every time what the ideal percentage is but without knowing the kerbweight of the car it is impossible to tell.

The number of people that come on here having been told by a dealer that their car is fine, only to spend thousands and find out it isn't, is huge.  I just noticed the OP had a Civic in their profile and most of the Civics are quite light and until the OP clarified the model it was quite possible their car was too light.

I think the Adrias come in a bit lighter than the plate.(there is a tolerance).Take your van to a public weighbridge with all required gear on board and get it weighed, simple!

If you are close remove as many things as you can to reduce weight,ie one gas bottle not two etc, etc. This can make a difference and keep you under the 85% rule.

Other than that just take it easy until you get the feel for towing and your confidence increases.I have a 2003 Adria 461 DB and it goes behind my Berlingo Hdi.Never had any worries about towing my van as its is very stable and smooth in all conditions and its loaded correctly the same way every time it goes out(a good plan for anyone).

Good luck.

Ali, I agree you asked, you didn't state a figure without asking.

It is not just this post, but all over this site and others there is a lot of people trying to help using third party websites to gain towing information for others.  This is fraught with danger (you could also state a car is heavier than it is).  A great deal of the information on the web is not always very accurate so really should not be quoted verbatum.

Yep and every time I see a post with a cuddles abelgratis link I always post to say check your hand book or use a weigh bridge because we have been finding the data inaccurate.

So for that very reason I asked the OP their figures and didn't quote any websites whatsoever.  I was just trying to be helpful as they had stated they were newbies and a lot of people are just not aware of weight ratios.  Scaremongering didn't even enter into the equation, but I knew Civics were in the main pretty lightweight.

I will be on the A303 and M5 later so hopefully I will encounter only well loaded and matched outfits......................... well you can live in hope lol!

The towing is not the problem it is the stopping thats the problem. And the weights that I quoted came from a Honda dealer.

Ali - while I would not want to highlight any site as worse than any others, I share your doubts as I have had to correct posts about Zafiras when that site has been mentioned.  Don't worry I am using the car's handbook or the figure from my own V5!!!!

Please don't take offence I was not stating you were scaremongering it was not your post I was having a go at you were asking the OP to check themselves.

Godd luck on your bank holiday travel (you may need it), I hope there will be no poorly maintained / loaded outfits in any of the areas you need to travel.

This shows that the only reliable place for weights is the owner's own V5 and the data on the car's own weight plate.

I considered a C5 with a quoted tow weight (in the brochure) of 1500kg with no disclaimers, so you should expect this is what you can tow with a full car, the difference of the figures on the weight plate was only 1200kg from memory.  Renault do a similar thing, but at least they state (admittedly only as a note) that the figure is driver only.

The van's seasonal Zafiral so luckily I will be travelling solo, well that's if the X Trail returns from the garage at lunchtime with a brand new exhaust on it.  Ouch, I think that's gonna hurt the bank account!

Ali, going solo allows for country lanes to (hopefully) avoid the worst of the traffic - good luck!!

i think the old health and safety issue crops up here as to regards caravan siting, in case of fire the van tow-hitch should be easily accessible to hitch on to and remove quickly from the scene of a fire,(dont know about Northan farm)where all the vans are turned facing the lake.would probably negate any insurance issues.
