Hi,

Just read on BBC news website that a caravan centre in LIncoln has just had 7 vans stolen, three of which are new 2010 models.

Thought I'd mention it incase anyone sees any vans in odd places etc. or comes across a bargain somewhere! I guess you can't be too careful these days when buying a used van.

Also I thought people reading this in the Linclln area may appreciate knowing. Our van is on the drive at the moment as we are just back from our holiday but it has a hitch lock, wheel clamp, alarm on and a car and truck in front of it!

The article is still on the BBc website but I haven't got a clue how to put a link on here.

I was in there last week, they didn't have much in, they were getting ready for their open weekend next month. Not much security, big gates, CCTV camera. The place is on the A46, less than 15 minutes from the A1, the caravans are long gone.

Hi Folks,

Just the kind of information i joined for. I used to be a member of an msn site and they all closed down in Febuary last year so never joined again. Last van i bought i was worried about a stolen van and i eventually purchased a Lunar Quaser. We said we wouldn't buy anymore as my mates van got stolen two years ago now and we lost good friends we toured with as they were totally sick when it happened.

I need advice again to make sure i don't get a stolen 2nd hand van i don't like the add on's dealers put on so like to buy private. Been lucky with previous two vans my first ever van was from an old couple who had a cracking abbey piper and the 2nd one was again from a genuine couple i knew and therefore could check out but doubt i will be so lucky 3 times.

I am surprised to read 2010 models stolen from dealer does the cris number not count for anything? What about vin numbers? Tracking devices etc. I have hitchlock and wheelclamps and keep it on secured site but thought cris number etc was enough am i kidding myself on?

What do i need to do to make sure my next van is not stolen? What do i need to ask? I saw on BBC last week a pen that can be used to scan cris numbers to see if it is stolen where can i get one of thise and are they expensive or worth the expense to save losing thousands?

Any help would be greatly appreciated we have the bug again and are looking for a 6 berth this time 2004 onwards.

Thanks

You can bet your life they're only available to the police and vosa etc.Its a good question though. If one of those chip readers were available to everyone then no one would end up buying a stolen van again would they?

That is my point police say they want us not to buy stolen vans but why can we not get the chip checked before we buy even if they need to check it!

I go to Blackpool a lot i take it that is part of the caravan triangle?????

Obviously with no DVLA registration & no visible car sized numberplates specific to the caravan needed, these caravans can be sold on within the thieves community, used for residential purposes for a few yrs & then sold back to the public for recreational use via Autotrader or ebay.

New caravanners are usually unaware of Cris & provided they don't try to register the 'van with Cris later the caravan will continue to be used until the end of its life. Even if the 'van is recovered yrs after the theft it will only be worth a small fraction of the insurance payout when new.

The police state they cannot enter a traveller site unless they have reasonable evidence that stolen property might be found there & apparenty the presence of many late model uk built caravans on that site alone is not 'reasonable evidence'.

I don't understand that. If i bought one from adtrader or ebay surely i could trace the person that sold it and recover my money? You need to use a credit card my wife sells clothes on them. So surely buying from ebay even if you met the person in a layby ebay can trace the seller?

Weetrapper1 asks "What do i need to do to make sure my next van is not stolen?"

Just my suggestions and no doubt others will add to the list

1.Only use a reputable dealer......doesn't necessraily mean that they won't sell a stolen van its just that it is less likely...so hedging your bets. Anyway, you will know where the dealer is if it goes pear shaped. Buying from a dealer you also have the protection of all of the Consumer protection Legislation. Having made that point there are many bona fide private sellers out there who will not do you a rough deal. There's more honest folk about then maybe we realise.

2. If you are buying from a non dealer, know where they live. See the van at their home. Don't meet them at a motorway service station. If you get the chance chat to the neighbours there will always be someone around who will say "I'm glad he's getting rid of that van..been in his yard for the past five years and its an eyesore" or words to that effect...so you know he's a bona fide seller.

3. Don't pay cash...mind you if you are selling wouldn't you want cash before you part with your baby so its reasonable for the seller to ask for cash. After all the seller doesn't know you either!! So suggest a bankers draft which is as good as cash.  You give your bank the money and they write out a Bankers Draft so the draft you give the seller is from the bank's own account and not yours. It cannot bounce. At least the cashing of that draft can provide a trail and a bona fide seller should not object to a draft.

4. Ask to see the CRISS documents before handing over your money..assuming its a caravan made since CRISS was introduced. Check the VIN number on the documents coincides with the number on the van. Don't just look on the window for the VIN number

From 1932 - 1991 the serial number was stamped on a small plate fixed to the exterior side panel immediately behind the main entrance door, (on two door caravans behind the nearside door).

From 1960 - 1986 the number was also often (but not always) stamped on the A frame beneath the A frame cover, the usual position was either on the nearside leg (on the outside face) of the A frame or at the head of the A frame where the two legs were joined by a flat steel plate.

From 1987 UNTIL 1991 the serial number was stamped on the nearside leg of the A frame (on the outside face) immediately to the rear of the A frame cover. (So it was visible with the A frame cover still in place, unlike the earlier numbers that required the A frame cover to be removed).

From 1992 onwards the VIN number was etched on the bottom right (when viewed externally) corner of all of the windows and stamped on the offside of the A frame and a window was cut into the A frame cover to highlight the position of the number. (on 1992 models the number was stamped immediately to the rear of the A frame cover). The VIN number is not stamped on the plate behind the entrance door.

5. Visit http://www.carlight.co.uk/faq/date-built.html This tells you how to decifer VIN numbers. Check that the Vin code used gives you the year of manufacture that coincides with what the seller is telling you about the van or what you know about the van

6. Check details of the van offered for sale via a non dealer with the actual van details which you may find on the net. Just to make sure the van conforms to the manufacturers spec especially for the alleged year of manufacture

7. Check here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=108 which lists stolen caravans notified to this site

8. Carry out an HPI check before buying.  Telephone CRiS on 01722 411 430 and give them the full 17 digit identification number of the caravan BEFORE parting with your money. There is a fee to pay but coculd save you money. The check will also tell you if the van was ever an insurance write off and thus may not be roadworthy. If you are buying from a dealer then the dealer should have done this so ask him if he has and for a copy. Visit http://hpicheck.com/caravans.html for more information

9. Get the registration document and a written receipt for your money. Sellers name and address and van details on the receipt.

Phil

Anybody with access to a computer can open an ebay selling account, you don't need to open a paypal account so theres no checks. ebay has always been about feedback, thats how you trust sellers. Positive feedback is the seller's reputation, thats how ebay works. Many caravan sellers have 0 feedback, not neccessarily dodgy, ebay is a good way to sell a caravan & worth opening an acc.just to sell one.

You will often see caravans from the travelling community on ebay. Hobbys etc, you can tell by the photo & the general layout of the ad, payment is always required in cash. Not neccessarily nicked, of course(not by that particular seller, anyway.)

Autotrader is of course known as the Pikey's bible.
