Hi. We came home early after a wet and muddy Northern Centres Rally in the South Lakes.

The field was begining to churn up this morning even with a full day of the rally still remaining.

Fortunately there are still lots of kind folk there with the 4 x 4's if any of the remaining campers do get bogged down.

It was one of those weekends when we both just wanted to get home.

Has anyone else had one of those weekends or do you stick it out whatever????

Agreed we abondoned it today as well. We had planned to return home tomorrow but the fields were in a poor state and weather conditions didnt seem likely to improve . My 4x4 never moved between arrival and departure as the event was yellow flagged ( no vehicle movement allowed ) but it annoyed me to see many cars moving about unnecessarily causing extra damage to the ground . I appreciate the event organisers and block marshalls efforts and enjoyed the sports and sunday nights entertainment in the marquee but the ground condtions were far from ideal . We had already had a week at Braithwaite with lots of rain and mud i'm glad to be back home again .Normally we'd stick it out regardless but not this time !

We would normally stick things out to the end but suspect that a good deal of people left today, which is a shame considering the work that goes into organising an event of this size.

At least with a number of early departures today, tomorrow's task will be slightly easier with further rain falling over-night.

Lets hope for better weather at next year's event.

think they need to look for a disused airfield where you can park outfits on the runway LOL Does anyone know where next years will be and who's hosting it ? At least it ran this year last years was cancelled due to bad weather .

When there is so much to lose it is worth considering a venue that could be used on the hardstanding if necesary.

I guess the different venues are more of an attraction to some than the rally events themselves, I did note that there was a survey form with the documentation this time round. I shaould have a look at it!!

I don't know where the next one is as yet.

Hi

we went to this rally, it was our first time at a Northern Centres Rally.

The fields were very soggy and churned up in parts. However the weather stayed bright enough for all of the well organised activities to go on and lots of fun was had by all........until....(and I bet your glad you moved on when you did)...just before midnight on the monday eve North Lancs were woken by lots of movement and flashlights as we were told to get up asap and move the van as the fields were flooding.  Half asleep, in the pouring rain and in pjs we dragged the awning down and tried to gather as many of our things as possible.  We fled to one of the marquees, where a comforting hot drink and blankets where handed out whilst the men folk helped to move the vans further up the hill with their 4x4s.

Things could have been much worse if it wasnt for the kindness of the ralliers who with no thought for just themselves mucked in and made sure everyone was helped.

The organisers made sure we had regular updates and plenty of hot drinks and comfort.  We we very quickly given the all clear as the floods ebbed back and we returned to our vans. The following day was just the same everyone came out made sure that all was ok and that we could get off the field.

We have never been so looked after by such fantastic people.  We would never be put off joining any rally again, although hard standings do sound a much better idea!!

Dawn

ps next years Rally was announced to be at Houghton Hall and run by East Yorkshire

we'll def be there!!

Hi Dawn

It sounds quite scary.

I had internet in the caravan and spent more time on the internet as we only had 4 freeview channels on the tv on only one radio station on both the car and caravan.

I was able to look at the weather conditions and forcasts over the weekend and we could see that the rain was likely to get worse on the Monday and Tuesday, although i think most of the sports were probably completed as we kept seeing the teams moving to and from the sports arenas.

There is always a very strong team spirit and you can always rely on support at any of the rally's, nevertheless you must have been relieved once you were on the road and on your way home.

Hi

if you go onto the NLCC website gallery for Northern Centres you will see just how bad the floods were!!  Myself and my 3 children were safe inside the marquee unaware of just what was happening outside.  I was amazed to see just what they were dealing with.  I thank them so much.

Dawn

I would normally stay to the end! We were at Solfest Bank holiday weekend and the camping fields and festival fields were churned up, police put a stop on vehicle movement for Health and Safety reasons and we managed to get the wee campervan off on Monday ok but I pitied the poor tenters whos tents blew away, plastic pegs for tents and awnings is the way forward they keep them well pegged down in wind and mud!! LOL

We love weekends like that. It's what caravanning is all about. We've been to a few rallies where people are getting towed on on Friday afternoon.

I think the conditions add to the excitement of caravanning but once water levels reach the level shown on the photos on the NLCC website it becomes a different matter.

The floods happened very quickly and it could not have been pleasant being woken from your bed and then having to lift the awning and all its contents before dragging the van to higher ground.

I suspect that water has entered the van through the vents in the floor under each of the lockers.

I am just pleased that we left a day early.

Yes there were some that had the flood waters in their vans, and for them it must have been a nightmare situation that no-one would have imagined or wanted!.  Good luck to them and hope that things are sorted quickly so they can keep on rallying.

We were also at the Northern centres rally. The rain did not deter anyone from competing in the events, and the highlight on the monday was the tug of war finals. We were with the South Yorkshires on the far field that was furthest from the river and on a little higher ground, but even we were aware there was "something going on" down the hill in the middle of the night when some of our men started up their 4x4's in the middle of the night to go and help tow people out of the mire and water. There is an excellent team spirit in times of emergency and we were proud of the men who went to help. However we had no idea that the water was so deep and feel really sorry for anyone who had their van soaked. On tuesday midday we had to be towed out of the mud (car and van) despite having a 4x4 and driving as carefully as possible. We then went out of the back lane of the site as we were near that end and did not want to add to the congestion down at the 'bottom'.
