We've come to the conclusion that we want to get a caravan - that was the easy bit (it's taken DH 12 years to get me camping which I have loved and I swore I would never get a tourer!). We've now decided to upgrade (decision made after numerous damp trips to the toilet block and packing away wet!).

So we have an 03 Ford Mondeo 2l TDCi 130bhp. Have found the kerbweight is 1495-1549 from the handbook, giving us 1275 on the 85% guide.

But what is the noseweight thingy - cannot find a reference to this anywhere in the car manual? We don't currently have a towbar - does the one we get have any bearing on the noseweight?

Also can someone advise on a van - we would like a 4/5/6 berth that has a diner at both ends. Want a toilet and shower but not bothered about a full-on shower as would only use in emergencies! Looking at spending upto £8K including all extras.

We are limited to 7ft2 width as this is the space down the side of our house where we will store.

Also I prefer the idea of buying from a dealer to get some sort of warranty, although hubby has been reading loads on internet and likes the idea of buying privately as you tend to get more thrown in and cheaper.

Any guidance gratefully received.

You can get better deals buying private but you have to be so careful to not buy a damp 'van.  My advice would be if you are buying privately is to pay someone like a local caravan servicer to have a look around it, check for damp etc.  Obviously you would only want to pay him once so look around and at dealers and ebay to find the layout you want 1st.  Once you've settled on a 'van take a look and then get someone in to check that it is all ok.

the 500/5 bailey we have is an MPTLM of 1272 kgs and it has the diner/bedroom at both ends.think the mondeo has a towbar weight of 75 kgs but check this when fitted.the towbar weight is 7% of MTPLM or the max of your towbar allowed.if you want a warranty you will need to buy from a dealer only, for £8 k the bailey caravan can be transferred for £25.

You can still go round the dealers and have a sit in all his vans to get the feel of what you want.

Keep a clear head though and don't get carried away or you may leave with an empty wallet.

Have a look at the Bailey Ranger 540/6

http://www.bailey-caravans.co.uk/product-range/new-caravans/ranger/layouts/viewLayout.php?LayoutID=58

6 berth 7'2" wide and 1306kg. Should be fine with the Mondeo.
