This may be a stupid question but, as everyone seems to advise using a damp meter to check caravan walls before buying , told my hubby we need to buy one before we go to view .
He says that the probes have to penetrate the surface .
Will this not leave holes , and won't the seller object to me poking holes in the walls , leaving it looking like a dartboard ?
The one I have is from B&Q and works by touching the surface of the walls. It the omits a squeel if there is any moisture present. No need to penetrate the surface.
My Grandchildren find it very amusing to touch each others skin with it and listen to the noise, so no need to make holes.

You can and should penetrate and in fact do so in courners of the van that wont matter (under seats/beds etc). I have found that touching walls doesnt really work but with a little bit of pressure (but not making holes) tends to help.
The damp meeter was the best thing I invested in and made me walk away from a few vans that looked like a bargin!!!
See here http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/checking-for-damp.htm . You must penetrate the caravan wall boards to check the wood for damp , if you don't , all you will be checking is the vinyl wallboard covering .
So is this going to leave holes in the wallboards like dart holes ?
Can't see sellers being happy with this ?
If the wallboards are not soft at all , would this mean there is no damp?
see if you can hire a proffesional meter that uses sonic waves to detect damp just by moving the meter over the surface ,if it showes a damp reading then use the probes to double check,
this type of meter does both methods.Dear I know but not in the context of what a damp van could cost you
Hi Debbie , the meter i bought makes such tiny pin pricks in the wall board they are very difficult to spot , i wouldn't think a seller would have a problem if you used the same meter . What you could do is , if your worried about leaving pin prick holes , tell the seller ( if your thinking of buying ) that you'll buy their caravan subject to a damp test from a caravan dealers , proving the caravan is damp free.
