Hi.
We have bought a new caravan that has a Tracker fitted, but its never been activated. Have contacted the mfr who have quoted £250 to come out & activate & then want a yearly fee for keeping it "live". Now this sounds ok, thought I, I bet the insurance premium comes right down as there is a very very good chance of the caravan being recovered should it be stolen.
How wrong was I.
It only knocks £20 off the premium.!!!
Ridiculous.
Probably because, although the Tracker will reduce the risk of total loss from theft, it won't reduce the risk of the damage associated with a theft attempt - if some low-life takes a fancy to your 'van, your insurance company will have to pay up for the repairs to the damaged legs, hitch, wheels, door, missing contents, damaged alarm system .... You stand a VERY good chance of getting your van back, but it doesn't decrease the financial risk to your insurance company by a vast amount. (BTW - we have a fully monitored Tracker and wouldn't be without the peace-of-mind it gives of 'knowing' the 'van is where we left it).

So the tracker tracks the stolen caravan to the middle of a large traveller site, what happens then......?
Then the Tracker is obviously wrong. Those paragons of virtue...

Ours is monitored by the tracker company - if it is triggered (lots of things set it off - the caravan alarm being triggered, the caravan battery being disconnected, the Tracker itself being tampered with, etc), they contact us immediately. If we then confirmed that we hadn't done something to trigger it, they track its whereabouts and liaise with the police to recover it. The vast majority are recovered within an hour.
£250 seems steep if its already installed though... yes it is ask for a discount and then you will think about it,i would as they stand to lose your yearly fee..
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I am not sure I would want the van back if it has been in the care of these undesirables. Back within an hour - that sounds more like a sales pitch. Wouldn't they need to arrange warrants to search the property where its kept?
