I know this is a really silly question, but it is one I would like to know the answer to before I go. As you are all lovely and very clever on here I thought you could help.
We are going to view/pick up a caravan tomorrow and would love to take it out for a short Weekend break. We will be having EHU so is there any need to have a leisure battery as well? Can everything be powered from EHU?
the only silly question is the one you do not ask.if you are EHU and have a modern caravan plugged in then the 12v system should run from this.the battery is a back up.would not like to be without one though.depends on the charger fitted.

when we bought our van we werent going to invest in a battery because we thought everything would work off the electric - its a good job we listened to advice and bought one because our water pump works off the battery (as we found out last month on our big holiday when our battery went flat). Saying that our van is a 1990 so things may have changed depending on the age of your van as michael stated.

I am very new to caravans!!!
If you dont have a leisure battery fitted your 12 volt charger may struggle if you demand more power than it can supply , the battery acts as a back up when your 12 volt system is under high demand
if you dont have a battery your fridge also wont work when towing if you have the grey socket fitted

If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.
As said it depends on age, before the 90's no you will need a battery of some sort, early 90's and it depends what charger is fitted, from 93 your probably ok without a battery but make sure the battery connections can't touch each other
I thought you needed a battery for the fridge to work while towing Garry,or are the newer vans differant

Also remember that Caravan Site Electricity is notorious for failing, especially in the evenings when sudden cold snaps have everyone turning on heaters and tellies for cosy nights in.
Without a good battery, you could be the only van on the site that is occupied but in total darkness!
Thanks for all your help, I knew you would be able to help . We have only been camping without EHU. we only bought a trailer tent this year and have been unable to use it, we never thought in a million years that we would be possibly getting a caravan. Sadly my neighbours wife passed away and he now is selling the caravan to us for next to nothing as all he wants is a family to use it.
It is a sprite Musketeer not sure of the age yet. We are all going to see it after school today. I love the way we all get soooo excited, it like christmas come early . As my neighbour is a very honest, genuine older person I think it will be fine. I'm not sure I would have bought one if I had to buy from someone else. Now all I have to do is sit tight and sell my Baby, which is my raclet iris!!
