There are various threads on here about not using corner steadies to jack the van up but while everybody talks about winding the steadies down, nobody really says how far. So the question is how much do you wind your corner staedies by? I was once told that you should wind them down until they touch the ground and then give them one turn more. But then there is the question of what constitutes touching the ground?
To start the discussion off: I wind my steadies down until the pad (foot plate?) can not be slid about and then I give them one more turn.
I think sometimes you have to reset the steadies irrespective of the type of pitch - it could depend on weather or not you have one or two 'soft corners'.
When we had the folding camper, the instructions for that said wind down until they touch the ground then give half a turn. That's pretty much what I do with the caravan too but, with the pads on, until the actual steady, not the pad, touches the ground.
I do find, particularly on grass, that they require another turn after a day or so.
i bet none of you has thought of this as being the reason you have to go back around but we all turn up on site and do the same things dont we? well i have the reason we all need to go back around and do them again, once on arrival you have all your gear in the van, the awning the chairs the aqua rolls etc etc, well take all this out and up comes the van!!! so we now just do them enough to stop it moving around til i go in and throw all the stuff out then hubby does them properly and we dont have any problems now!!

I transport far more stuff in the car than in the van. Add me and my missus and the van probably takes on half a ton in weight once we've finally set up camp and got settled. I still have to reset the steadies after a day or so. Sorry, your theory don't work... I reckon it's because the movement of the occupants back and forth rocks the van slightly, and forces the steadies into the ground.
Now, how to set the steadies in the first place? Easy. Keep winding until the wheels of the van are off the ground, then ease them back a turn!
------------- * You never know where you're going 'til you get there...
well as our combined weight comes to around 160kgs and the weight of the stuff we take out is more than that then my theory still holds true! at least for the intial set up thing anyway. see once your van is able to rock its then that it makes things worse on the ground as it makes the gap deeper every time you push that steady down again, now if you dont have that in the first place then it wont happen!!!

think like it was a wacker plate!! that is what your pad is doing everytime you move in the van and it rocks from one end to another, it compresses the ground under it, making the gap deeper each time, so the rocking gets worse and worse, making it deeper. now do you understand?
