Hi Has anybody any experience with Solar Panals.  We are considering purchasing one but as they are expensive can anybody advise as if they are worth it.  We are members of the caravan club and caravan and camping club and hope to do more rallies next year on sites without electricity.

We use the 13watt Maplin Solar breifcase one on rallies. We find that in the summer it keeps up with our usage of the battery provided we are not silly. It will certainly give us a few light in the evening and run the water pump without a problem. Earlier in the year, I wanted to test what it was giving us. With the battery disconnected and the solar panel connected to the battery terminals instead of the battery I was able to run 2 striplights or 1 striplight and the water pump.

Given that in the summer we get more hours of daylight to recharge the battery than we have were we want to run the lights then by my reckoning we should manage indefinately with our 85aH battery and the solar panel.

This time of year, I don't even bother connecting it up as it doesn't have a hope of keeping up with demand.

If you want to watch a TV, especially if you use an inverter to do it then you will flatten your battery withing a couple of hours and to keep up with that sort of demand you will need to spend a fortune on a solar panel.

The solar breifcase from Maplin is one of their products that often comes up on offer and can vary from £50 to £100 depending on when you buy it.

If you rally through the winter then most people will take a generator, even if they don't use it. If you do end up with no power, a generator will get you out of trouble and as I say, most people on a rally field will have one and you will get no objections with most centres.

I use a 40watt panel with a charge regulator,it keeps the battery topped up all the time. We watch telly about 2hrs hour a day and everything else gets normal usage and we NEVER go on electric hook up. The longest i've had away upto now is 12 nights, the battery was as full as i've ever seen it when i left the site for home. I wouldn't go any smaller in wattage than that. Mine cost me £190 in all but i did make by own brackets from aluminium angle. Don't listen to the ill informed people who looked into it 8-10 years ago, things improve and become cheaper rapidly over a short time and solar panels are no different. Some of the guff i've heared from people who are convinced they know what they're talking about is amazing. My advice would be to look online, shop around, get the biggest panel you can afford over a minimum of 40 watts and go for it and bear in mind you won't get anywhere near peak performance during autumn, winter and early spring.

Thanks you very  much for your advice, it is much appreciated.  It sounds good, we don't run a telly but do use lap tops and camera battery charges which it sounds as though it would be ideal for.

Thanks again to you both.  We will certainly shop around.

A laptop could zap the battery quite quickly. My laptop PSU is 65watt so that uses 5 times what my solar panel can cover in bright sunshine. I also assume that you are using an inverter to power the PSU which can be as low as 60% efficient so you would need to be looking at something pretty huge in the solar market to keep up with that sort of demand. Ofcourse, you could turn the laptop brightness etc to minimum and run it from its own battery for about 1-2 hours so no strain on your leisure battery at all there. If you then use the car, take the laptop and inverter out with you so it can be recharged while you drive.

the thing to remember is 14watt divide by 13voltmakes 1amp charge at midday nothing at night . so what ever you do dont leave an interior light on in car as thats about all it can power .watts divided by voltage equalls amps. if its cloudy you get nothing. i have 3x 80watt panels on roof and still get let down if cloudy days keep coming. i wouldnt waste my money on anything less than about 50 watts if you use a telly etc. you will require a bank of batteries as well.

Have a look here http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/new-page-2.htm , vwalan is right about the cloudy days i had 3 in a row while on a non electric site and at the end of the 3rd day our battery was getting pretty low ( low battery warning alarm on inverter ) .
You can now get a 40watt panel for £110 on ebay Click_here ( these are the people i bought from ).

We found in our current caravan the halogen lights are using a lot of electricity; we are planning to change them to LED's. We have had our solar panel for many years and found that TV etc also drains the battery quicker than the solar panel can charge it.

We have only used 12 v TV's , not an inverter but you still need to be  aware as some yuse more power that you think!

I think a lot depends on your tv, Mine uses less than 2 amps per hour and runs on 12 volt,i don't use an inverter for the tv. The only time i use a small 75watt inverter is to use a mains charger for mobile phones and the kids DS's as i find 12 volt chargers totally useless. My inverter plugs straight into the cigar lighter socket so i can use it in the car as well on days out to save the van battery but to be honest i just use what evers convenient at the time anything needs charging. I will stress that i haven't used it in winter yet so can't offer an opinion on how clouds affect the performance of the panel. I've done 4 nights on battery at new year without the panel so anything it puts in at all will be a bonus.

This is where I bought mine from.

http://www.sunshinesolar.co.uk/khxc/gbu0-prodshow/40WATTP.html

I had 8 days away at the beginning of September using my pannel. We watched tv for about an hour every evening and used a seperate battery for lights.
So my main leisure battery powered the pump for water, pump for the loo flush, tv, phone charger and the shower (water pump) for 2 people for 8 days using this solar pannel. It's not the cheapest, but everything is included, you even get a metal stand which you can chain up.

Going away for the forthcoming weekend, so will see how it copes in October!

Thanks for your help
