We got fed up with the strap over our awning singing in the wind & I decided to run the strap under the front canopy over the short frame poles that hold the little porch up. I put a cable tie round the strap, back through the hole this short pole goes through & over the pole so it holds the strap on the moulding of the frame leg instead of loading the fibre tube with storm force. I've done this for years & never had a problem.
Now we've got an awning with built in strap clips, we use both. Added to this, I also run a thin nylon rope around the frame mouldings & then straight down the line of the three awning legs to ground scews. I tie this tight but not pulling down so it's not putting force on the frame but also doesn't give the frame any lift. You can buy expensive storm straps that do the same job but they don't hold your awning down any better.
I'm going to ask about having storm strap clips fitted to our annexes. They're sold on Ebay & as you're in Bristol too Wizard, Kingswood canvas is where we go to have work done on our kit. They're brilliant.
My storm protection might seem over the top but, we've suffered serious gales several times over recent years & I'd rather secure it once & lay in bed listening to the wind than get up at stupid o'clock & peg it all down.
Thanks for the great info all . BB didn't know of Kingswood canvas until now will be planning a visit real soon . We're going to get them to add the strap clips . Could you point me to a picture on the net of the ground screws you use . Thanks.
Another quick question for all , do the awning straps need springs fitted to them , i'm sure i've seen springs on some of the tie down kits .

I use the Fiamma storm strap it comes with one spring, and as said use Delta`s,also if it sarts resinating in the wind give it a couple of twists on each end. the springs can tensioned more or less depending how strong the wind is and wont put undue stress on the poles.

I have seen some storm straps fitted to the last bit of the poles that have the hook that holds the small canopy out, then they dont rub on the canvas.

To stop it singing in the wind just put a couple of twists in each downward section and a couple of twists in the bit on the roof.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

We use sponges to stop the straps rubbing on the poles (the yellow ones that folk use to clean the car with). It minimizes wear on the 'canvas'. I have seen folk use the foam pipe lagging - that looks a good idea.
Hi all, we had a PDQ porch awning and it had bungee type elastic cables down both sides where it fitted to the caravan sides. If the wind got up in the night it really vibrated against the sides so I got some pipe lagging and slid it on then pulled it tight and it worked a treat , no more vibrating. atb Bill
