We currently have a Varta Drymobil battery which has had it but as the cost of replacing a gel battery is eye-watering we were thinking of replacing it with a normal leisure battery. This would need venting - is this simply drilling a hole in the floor to feed the vent tube through? And presumably sealing the hole with silicon or mastic?

Where batteries are in the habitation space of a van or motor home they are usually GEL type.
Where wet types are used they are normally housed in a locker sealed from the habitation space.
The vent pipe is really only to route any acid carry over with gassing, safely out of the way; the vent pipe is not a substitute for a correctly designed battery housing.
If you have a battery within the habitation space then the only sensible advice is to use a GEL battery.
If the van was designed for a GEL battery its charging system will not be right for the acid battery but you might be able to switch it to suit.
