ok - I need to insure the van and all the quotes ask about security devices. Do I need to buy a 'hitch lock' or something? is there anything else I should have to reduce a premium?
What are the benefits of joining the C&CC? I will be towing overseas in the summer and someone said something about Red Flag. What exactly is that and is that through C&CC?

I personally think Carvan club insurance is better, had C&CC and they were ok but CC is better not as many specifications. I have a hitch lock (came with van) a cheap £7.99 wheel clamp from Netto and a corner steady lock, they are there to reduce insurance costs as if someone wants your van that bad they will get it whatever security devices you have on. Have you seen the videos from the Caravan Channel of thieves taking a van with everything security even CCTV on it? Its amazing!! Anyhow the essentials are just needed to reduce premiums for me anyway!!

Hi Pippa,
Its always a good idea to have some sort of anti theft device, even if it is only to slow a thief down!
However before you rush out and spend lots of money, ring your insurers and ask them what their requirements are.
They vary from insurer to insurer.
Some companies will offer a discount for using certain devices.
Some wont insure you at all if you dont!

Yes Pippa, they are two different organisations.  Each with their own network of sites.  They both do insurance.  I am in both clubs but we reckon the Caravan Club is better for insurance.  We had our van stolen in May, and the CC were very fair.  We now have a new van and all is fine.

I would start by buying a hitch lock - you can then add to it later if you feel inclined.  The Caravan Club caravan insurance generally only ask for one security device, but it sometimes depends on the area you live and where you keep the van.  Every insurance company will expect some sort of security device, and you may get premium reductions for more devices, of storeage on a Gold CASSoA storeage site.

When you go abroad, I would advise taking out travel insurance.  This covers medical emergencies and basically breakdown cover.  The Caravan Club do a good insurance for this too.

As a member of the Caravan Club, you can also join Green Flag car breakdown service (by paying the appropriate fee)  and it includes recovery of the caravan too, should your car break down.  This is called MayDay.

You can get car insurance through the Caravan Club too.  I have found them very competative.

P.S. I am not employed by the Caravan Club and have no vested interest, 17 but have found them very good at these types of insurance.

The Caravan & Camping Club have a similar range of products.

By being a member of either or both clubs you also have the facility to use their sites, which tend to be cheaper than most commercial sites, if you can put up with the quirky ways of some of the wardens.

Any more questions, I'm sure folk will be onlt too pleased to offer their support.

Hope this helps.
