I've been looking for a while now for bike carriers for our Ford Mondeo (2008). The problem I have is that I'm not keen on rear mounted racks whilst towing the caravan. Towball mounted ones are a no no too as we only have a 80kg towball limit. So I thought my best option was a roof mounted one. I was all set to purchase the bars and cyle carriers when I got the OH to weigh our bikes. All 3 (including my 8 year old's bike) weigh approx 17kg each which is 2kg over the limit quoted for most of the roof mounted cycle carriers. We could possibly take our boys bike in the van but I certainly wouldn't want all 3 in there. I just wondered if anyone else had a Mondeo and how they have managed.
We have the same problem. We put 2 bikes in the 'van. But there is the inevitable bit of damage caused by doing this. I would suggest 2 on the roof, the boy's in the 'van. No real answer.
we use ford roof bars with thule freeride cycle carriers on our 02 mondeo.got the lot off the bay for around £50.think you`d get 3 of them on the roof bars, we have 2 and could probably fit another cycle in the middle though reaching it could be awkward.
Thanks for your replies. My main concern is the weights, in total the 3 weigh just over 50kg. Some of the holders for the roof ones recommend 15kg max each. I need to check the max weight than can go onto the roof bars too. I will check out the sites recommended,
I have just sold 4 thule ones that had been sitting in my garage for a year have a motorhome now and we carried four on our mondeo roof must say i never thought about the weight but no problems with them 2 adults and 2 child bikes adult ones on the outside for easy reach and lift .
Not sure if this helps you but thought id let you know anyway.
Thanks Gerry. I've been looking at some roof bars and they quote 75kg max which would mean that we could take all 3 on the roof. I think that I need to get good quality racks, they seem to hold 17kg. So we should just about get away with it. Thanks again,
