So I have been down to NEC and have come away with a few niggling things I need to mull over before I take the plunge and buy my first caravan.

Can anyone advise me If I dont take advantage of the great deal I was offered this week is the Manchester show in January as good as the NEC and do you think there will be some good deals to be had there too. I ask because I can hopefully iron out these problems before January !

Thanks

Don't believe that you could not get similar deals from a dealer if you went with cash in your hand at any time especially in January when sales are sluggish. Never been to manchester show though.

We have tried repeatedl through the year to be tempted by a Dealers offer, but nobody even came close to the deal at NEC. Remember, the dealers scale back their business in the slack times, so you will find they have no stock at other times. Apparently (it may be an urban myth) the excessive trade-ins at the exhibitions are put across to "Marketting Costs"

I bought at the NEC this year.

Manchester is a shadow of NEC sizewise, but at the end of the day, how many manufacturers are there ? And if you don't want a motorhome, a trailer tent, and every gadget under the sun, well you will see the vans at Manchester.

What is a deal?  Well you can be sure that whatever deal you have been offered, someone somewhere will offer you the same thing for a pound less.

Decide what you really want/need, sleep on it, and then ask around. If you are buying a first van, and buying new, it's a simple question to ask,.Who wants the buisness most , at the time. At the moment there is a shortage of 2 nd hand vans,  and trade in represents a chain of profit to the dealer, so you may not be top of the list at the moment.

My tips would be

1 Talk deals at the end of the month/year, when dealerships are trying to get their figures up to get on the next discount level from the supplier.

2 Be flexible on delivery. At time of order, if you say you will accept any delivery within the next few months, this gives the dealer a backstop on figures if someone gives back word, and you may well find your van comes through a lot quicker than expected. Course you have to be ready to pay on demand.

Bottom line,  nobody ever got rich by giving stuff away, and there are only so many "loss leaders" you can offer.

Thanks for replying.
I now have my heart set on a new Bailey GT 510/4 but my financial position is telling me if I could buy early next year it would be a great help. I know I wont use the caravan before next year and probably would'nt get one delivered before then anyway.
I am just wondering if I am missing out on what I think is a reasonable deal offered to me at the NEC and if I will get a similar deal early next year, possibly at the Manchester caravan Show.
I suppose buying a caravan is very similar to buying a car and you should never let your heart take over when about to buy as what im buying is not a 'one off' but a mass manufactured item.

I also went to the NEC looked at the 510/4 since we have the 2008 model to see the difference, seems to have cutback on the reading lights and extended platform over the table storage (so you can either crack you head or dig in you back on both sides of the caravan now).

That being said it good model far better than the Pegasus 554 with it cranky bed and 534's herb store , by next year they will have ironed out the dross and faults.

There's a bigger show at the NEC in February...but remember vat goes back up in January and it could go higher than 17.5%. If you order now you'd only need to pay a deposit till delivery day.

It would also seem that after trying to deal at the NEC that if you want a new van "expected" delivery time for most of them will be Feb or Mar next year, so if you are looking to buy in Feb you may not have a van until may/jun unless you can buy one from stock and then VAT will be then be charged at whatever is the current rate. Its not just the dealers that are playing on this - the government ministry of misinformation is making all sorts of noises from 15 to 20% - no one really knows what it will be in Jan. Stocks at dealers at the minute seems to be low on both new and secondhand vans so it is really down to when you want your van and when you want to pay for it. Most are selling on the premise that if VAT goes up then your deal price will change to take account of this. Only one dealer stated that the deal price would remain the same regardless of VAT rate. Also remember a 4 year old van will be treated as 5 years old in Jan so trade in could be lower.
