Was all set yesterday to bid on a Kip caravan, so logged in and scrooled down the page for the umpteenth time to gaze at it again.... and there was a message at the bottom saying DON'T BID, Caravan no longer for sale and explanation that they were coming home from their very last camping trip and the brakes failed on the car behind and reduced it to splinters. I felt so sorry for the owners - and myself, because that was the very van I wanted.

I even send a message of condolence! They were on the level, BTW.

So if anyone sees another Kip caravan for sale, let me know...

To be honest I didnt know what a KIP looked like until your post prompted me to look it up!

Keep your chin up. If you keep looking the right one will turn up sooner or later.

Might even be worth putting a wanted ad in the free ads on UKCS.

Like it says, its free!

Good Luck!

What's special about them that appeals to you?

They look quite old so is because they're a classic?

I would have thought they were fairly unusual in the UK. Why not nip over to Holland and have a look at a few. Most dealers will have someone, if not all, English speakers. There are no real difficulties in buying a van in Holland and importing it to the UK and you will have a far better choice. I have always quite like the look of Kip cravans although most would be a bit small for me.

I love the Kip. Nearly bought one a few years ago. Still wouldn't mind one.

Love the Sprintaways too - too much £££ though... if money was no object, I'd buy one tomorrow!

I'd like a little old one because I can't afford a new one!

Spoke to Leisure Vehicles today - they are approx 3 miles away from me, but they only import really newish ones, their cheapest was around 4,000.

I'm just hoping one comes along before next spring. otherwise I'll be camping in my car and awning! LOL!

Well, for a start, they are very lightweight and easy to tow and pitch, quite important for me as I can't handle heavy weights. There's a door in the middle of the back, not at the side like on most 'vans... and there are two full length beds (you don't have to make them up to lie down, which I have to do a few times in a day)... And they have a sink, cooker, fridge, ehu, heater, cupboard and wardrobe/shelves.

Thats really all I need. I used to have a little Bedford Rascal Romahome, now sold as I was struggling to drive it. These are much the same layout, except you can stand up all the way thru, instead of crouching, like I had to in the roma - which was uncomfortable with my back probs!

I've advertised here, there and everywhere I can think of, please if you know of one for sale, get in touch!

KIP make all sizes from large to small, they went bust last yr but I think they were rescued.

The one you refer to is a KIP Kompakt, the smallest of which has a rear door. Plenty for sale in Holland, on Marktplaats clic on 'Caravan en Kamperen' & then 'Caravans Kip' If you did want to buy in Holland, you would find most of the sellers could speak English & all you would need to do is pay cash, put on your numberplate & tow away. No customs or owt.

yes, Snowy, I did, and I still miss her! She also had a full service and safety check before I sold her. Two lovely young people came and took her away before I changed my mind.... awww, so sad.

Its ok driving on't 'wrong' side Jax, you could turn it into a bit of a holiday. I guess it would be cheaper to drive to Dover, cross to Dunkerque & drive up to Holland than go Hull-Rotterdam although if you went that route you could do it in(v. expensive)day trip.

KIP caravans were never sold in the UK although possibly a UK dealer did import some a few yrs ago. There seem to be a few Kompakts around in the UK & they do come up on ebay occasionally. Loads around in Holland tho so if you really want one thats the place to look

Caravans in Holland are registered like cars & have to be MOT(APK)tested so even an old one should be in good mechanical condition.

Think I am right in saying Kip were part of the Tirus Group in Holland, which owned a number of caravan manufacturers, including Lunar. The group filed for liquidation, but some of the subsiduaries reformed, Kip being one of them, and no doubt Lunar.

Kip have been a much respected manufacturer in Holland for 70 yrs. Don't know if anyone in UK is servicing them, but buying in Holland is straight forward so long as there is no trade in.

AJ
