Had a lovely time at the NEC spending imaginary money- fell in love with the various fixed island bed layouts with the separate washroom & shower 'in' the bedroom (eg. Elddis Cyclone, Sterling Elite Explorer etc)    BUT amount they cost / size / twin axle / new car / never-had-a-caravan-before notwithstanding.... just realised that the design means that the toilet window & waste would therefore be on the awning side of the caravan !

Does anyone else think this may be an issue (eg privacy / smells / emptying toilet tank etc ) ?

We had one on the awning side.  It was never a problem.  We had no window in the toilet/shower room, just a roof light which was always ope, so no smells. The toilet was always emptied before the red light came on, when it was convenient, so we did not have to do it at meal times. Cannot comment on the privacy though, it would be worse if you had to have the light on.

If you get smells then you would get them in the van too. The compartment is sealed so can't see what the problem is really.

Sorry I don't quite understand the privacy bit - if the window is on the awning side would that not mean more privacy ? Only your own family (if you have one) would be able to see anything & surely could be trusted not to look - at any rate preferable to any passing stranger getting an eyeful ? 17

Our toilet cassette door is on the awning side - I prefer it that way!  Means I don't get quite so wet when it's raining and toilet needs emptying!  Our bathroom window is at the back - we just keep the blind closed.

We had a caravan with the toilet waste on the awning side, as a result we actively looked for one that didn't have one, as we didn't like taking the cassette thought awning. Nothing to do with privacy just it was more difficult and dictated where you could put things in the awning.

yes i understand what your saying regarding this as in our recent hunt for a newer van that has put me off every dsingle one we looked at

im sorry but best willin the world ok there will always be a tiny bit of dribble, and i certainly dont want to think that when i go out in the awning that im going to have my feet in wee!! also what if you are all sat in the awning on a night and need the loo, why not just bring a bucket out int he awning a pee in front of everyone thats there? its only 3 inches at best between you and everyone else so that is a definate no no for me.

we went to a show last year and fell in love with the van we are getting tomorrow but the loo thing was what put me off as it was on the wrong side!, since then we have found the earlier model that has it on the right side i.e. you empty it from the other side of the van, hence why we are getting the one we are now.

you can see i feel strongly enough about it to not bother with a van even tho on every other aspect we loved that van and would have bought it if it hadnt been for that reason.

Understand about the waste thing anyway. If you use an awning that would potentially be super-yucky  17

Yes, our last van had the toilet waste on the awning side, and i agree, it means leavin g a space, or having to move things when you had to empty the loo.  Other than this there was no particular problem, but I just didn't like it.  We've gone back to a van where the toilet compartment is on the opposite side.

Yes ours is the same, would prefer it the other side, but think it should be ok, we have brought a porch awning (but not used it yet) so it might still be outside.

Thanks for the replies - not sure if it would be an issue for me or not really ??!  though we do go away camping a lot with friends so I'm sure the awning could become a central meeting point - and now I've got the 3" away in my head 17

By the time we make a decision I bet the layouts have all changed too anyway !

I'm with Scampi on this one. I wish all the outside hatches, toilet, gas etc, were inside the awning.

Our awning tends to be the central gathering point in an evening when we go away with friends, twice a year.  When we had the Vendee, although I didn't warm to the idea, the toilet compartment in the awning was no particular problem.

Personally I think getting the van layout right completely supersedes in importance where the loo access hatch is. Both our current and previous van had it the awning side and its hard to think of any issues with that.
To talk about it leaking points to the seals not being serviced as they should and I would not tolerate that whichever side its fitted.

If you use a porch awning or a modern lightweight, and the cassette door is far enough back, it won't be in the awning. These little awnings are so much cheaper and easier to put up. We love ours and it is plenty big enough.
