Doesn't each van have a maximum payload, besdies what your vehicle can tow.?????????????

You have hit it on the head.Every van has a maximum technical permissable payload, "MTPLM" I am amazed at the apparent attitude "OF SLING IT IN THE VAN THE CAR IS BIG ENOUGH TO PULL IT."from most of the posters

To the OP weigh the van at your local weighbridge,& make sure it is not overloaded. Its illegal to tow a overloaded trailor as i'm sure you are aware,& there are plenty of VOSA check points around to catch you out

Quite right - it's a LIMIT not a TARGET. And surely a "too light" noseweight indicates excessive loading behind the axle.

As the last two posters said, this really is a very casual attitude to what's probably the most important thing about your van: keeping it within it's permitted weight. Overload it by more than a few kilos and you face the job of unloading it at the roadside before being allowed to continue your journey, a hefty fine, void insurance if something happens etc. VOSA were mentioned above, they now have numerous WIM (weigh in motion) sites around the roads network. These are set into the road and weigh your axles as you pass over them at speed. Overloads flag up an alarm, and you get pulled in further up the road. Whilst (I don't think) caravan weights are on the database yet, how long before they are I wonder?? For info, I took my 'van to the local weighbridge and was stunned to find it overweight. Two years ago, it was fine. All those little extras really do add up. For your own peace of mind, get it weighed!

As usual we have everything 'but the kitchen sink' to take with us in our ABI 4 berth Dalesman.

Odd. We do take the kitchen sink with us - it's part of the caravan!

With people stating that the car should have no problem pulling the weight, can I point out that the thread title is not "Are we overloading our car", "but are we overloading our VAN"

Without knowing the user payload of the van then I cannot say but the more weight you put in the van, the more it weighs in relation to the car and the higher the chance of it becoming unstable.

Provided your car can handle the weight (which most posters beleive is the case) then try to put as much as possible in the car rather than the van if unsure of if close to your vans maximum payload.

I wonder how many of us read this one & thought it sounded very familiar. lol. When we unpacked our van to store everything for the winter, we couldn't get in the front hall.
