The tyre pressures on our Mondeo for towing are quite a bit higher than not towing so when we get on site and un-hitch should we lower the tyre pressures on the car until returning home and increase the pressure again?  I must admit I've never seen anyone else do this and it does seem to be a bit of a 'faff' - does anyone else inflate, deflate, inflate and so on or do you just leave the tyre pressures the same whilst away and deflate when returning home.

This is the first time away towing with the Mondeo and with our other car the difference in tyre pressure towing and driving solo are minimal so we've always left them high until returning home.  Any advice/thoughts appreciated.  Thanks everyone.

Jules

I Always inflate/deflate to stabilise the tow and safer solo driving. Also maximises tyre wear. Have seen a few do it. usually wusses with electric pump. I always carry a foot pump

I would personally be inclined to leave them somewhere in the middle while away and reduce the tyre pressures again when I get home. Under inflated tyres will cause the edges of the tyres to wear and over inflated tyres will cause the centre to wear. Finding somewhere in the middle will even out if you do similar mileage towing and solo whilst away. Incorrectly inflated tyres will affect the handling, but provided the tyres are matched across each axle and are within a few psi of the recommended figure then the effect is minimal. Don't forget the spare wheel can only be set for one axle or the other and the front and rear axles rarely have the same pressures so fitting a spare wheel will at best have a 50% chance of being correctly inflated and in reality, how many of us regularly check the pressure in our spare? I don't (in fact last time I did check it was flat) I do carry a tyre inflator but suspect I am in a minority.

I pump them up to go away with and reduce the pressure when I remember when I get home. Over inflation whilst travelling lightly loaded has only the consequence that you tyres will wear at a greater rate in the centre, and very slightly reduce the footprint on the road. Underinflation whilst towing leads to instability.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

we run ours at 32 front  - 34 rear for towing and 30 solo on both axles.we usually leave them inflated to towing pressure while away but if not towing for a while drop them back down.

i also carry a tyre inflator and not a foot pump 17

My new Mondy has 225/45 low profiles and I've just towed with it for the first time this afternoon.
These run at 36psi front and 33psi rear, my usual practice is to, (depending on what extra weight is in the car), leave the fronts and put a minimum of 3psi extra in the back, from the comfy uneventful journey I'd say it holds true for these tyres as the other 50 or 55 profile tyres.

I'd put a little more in if the tyres are mid quality or probably go for the maximum extra pressure if budget tyres, this I've found helps stiffen the side walls of the cheaper tyres and stops the car 'floating from side to side'.
Regardless I've always left them at the higher pressure while away and generally drop them next time I check them

On other sound piece of advice I got about Mondys and why I don't put extra in the front for towing, is always put 2psi in the fronts! this stops the outside edges scrubbing in general use and they then wear more evenly

Although not a Mondeo, I up my rear pressures from 32 to 36 when towing on annual hols usually a 350/400 mile journey, when away for a weekend I leave them at 32 as it`s mostly a journey less than one hour.

When towing with my Mondeo Estate, with self leveling rear suspension, I tend to leave the front at 32-35 and up the rear to 40-41 as reccomended by Ford. The tyres are 205/50/r17 93w.
If I am touring around whilst the van is sited I drop the rear tyres down to what Ford reccomend.
The reason I do it is not to prevent uneven wear but for safety reasons. If the worst happens, I want the maximum grip I can get, and you never know when that might be!

I carry an electric pump as I don't want any more muscle in my right leg!
