Well after having had our wee bailey for 4 seasons, and now well and truly outgrown it we have been looking for our next van.
Today we looked at a 2006 Sterling Europa at a dealers. What a lovely van. Now we've been offered a really, really good price for p/xing so we've no concerns there.
It's far more modern than our 10 year old one, and in excellent condition and certainly is large enough [with long enough bunks with our DD being 5.10 and not yet 14!!]
What I'd like to know is how have others found this van. Is there anything I should be looking out for?
Many thanks in advance!!

We have one of these, but a bit older than the one you are considering. With fixed end bunks our twins have their own 'dens' to retire to when they want peace and quiet. The side dinnette is perfect for them to draw/read/play board games etc. The lounge turns into a really nice big double bed which is comfy too! The washroom looks paultry but is much better to use than to look at. Garage facility is really handy, and with kids a removable carpet is a must! We have slept 5 in ours with no problems at all - in fact is was a pleasure not a chore! Our 540 is a windward dealer special so has some extra equipment (gas bbq point, outside power socket, different fridge, loadsa extra internal power points etc), but even without these bits it would be a super family van. Only thing we think is a bit small is the fridge - we always take a 3 way chest fridge for longer trips away. Sometimes we put it where the side dinette table goes, and sometime we put it in our utility tent outside. Gives us huge amounts of fridge space so we never suffer warm beer/wine lol!! Our family of 4 love our 540. Just remember when you tow one that it is quite long and not exactly a lightweight. Worth putting up with this extra bulk to have the extra space when you set up camp. Comes with a A++++ from us.

The dealer is coming out at some point this week to come and have a look at our van and give us the price to change. We brought our one back home yesterday from storage and have now got all the cushions back in after having emptied it for the winter. They've put the van we want on hold...and will contact me if there is anyone else interested.
I've now got everything crossed that this deal goes ahead.

Update.....Dealer was out today. Has offered us a good ptc..so deal done. We take our wee bailey across on Saturday and collect our new van then. As there are no sites open near us....we're going to 'van on our front garden.
Sooo excited....and can't wait to tell DS [DD is off school today and thinks i'm mad to be so excited...but she wants to sleep in the van!]
Roll on Saturday!!

Coolios!! Report back once you have used it. I bet you love it hehe!! And remember to tow safe - check you tyre pressures and nose weight and gross trailer weight regularly and never rush. You have more fun when your journey is relaxed. And bear in mind you will have no rear visability through your new 540 - there are no rear windows!

WAHAAY.....we've got it home! We've got it home!!!
As i type the kids beds are made....the family are watching the tv in the van....i'm sitting in the house finishing cooking the tea so that we can eat it in the van.
We've had tea and cakes with our friends this afternoon....and have only had one slight hitch [or not hitch!!]
We've not had an alko hitch before and the new fancy lock that you can travel with locked on proved a bit of a problem in that once the van was leveled on our front garden, we couldn't for the life of us get the flaming thing off. We phoned the dealer, who talked us through how easy it was to lift off...but no. So with the promise that he'd come past after he closed at 4 this afternoon, we put all our bits and pieces in the van and, as I said did a spot of entertaining.
At 4.15 the dealer appeared [oh with the corner jack as well as there wasn't one!]. He too tried to get the lock off...but couldn't. He then said to OH..'Err could you just pull your car forward a tiny touch..don't move the van though!' So he jumped in the car and edged it forward...and the hitch head moved forward about 5cm's....and the lock just lifted off
DOH!!!!!
So we've learnt a valuable lesson....and as Ian said...at least we were at home and not away down to Pitlochry or something...oh and he's added a handy hint to his repertoire as well!!!!
So here's to our new 'van....and a new chapter in our 'vanning future...oh and roll on Easter when the caravan sites up here open again!!!!!

We had exactly the same thing happen when we got back last Sunday night on our drive after being away in our caravan for the first time. OH had problems releasing the alko hitch from the car (it was firmly locked on) after a while (& as a last resort) he told me to get into the car and release the hand brake and edge the car forwards by a few cm, BINGO it worked . We know now what to do if it happens again. I am now wondering if this is a common problem.
