Hi Guys,
I am about to pick up my new caravan and I am going to a twin axle.
How does the insurance thing work as I only re-insured my van in August ?
Is it like cars when you change you just pay extra for the new model etc.
The policy's seem to vary a bit regarding security but my current insurer by doing an online quote(closed today) seems quite happy to have 2 wheel clamps and a hitch lock.
Caravan Guard require a tracking device and alarm !
Can anyone answer my queries and give me some advice to which companies they us ?
Thanks for reading and your input !

we just ring CC when we change and they alter the monthly premium to suit. with our insurer if you have an alarm you must have it activated when not with the van.ive changed our insurance 3 times this year and will be changing again soon when we get the pegasus...no problems at all

I may have said this somehere else, but I'm pretty sure that the security requirements of different insurance companies depend upon individual circumstances/history of the individual applying for the insurance and the experience of each particular insurance company in a particular area.  One company can be cheaper in one area, where another company may be more expensive.

On our last caravan the only security device that the insurance company required was a hitch lock.  The van was stolen from a secure compound.  With our new van they still say just the hitch lock, but are now saying that our storeage site has to be a CASSoa Gold site and we are only allowed to keep the van at home for 48 hour stints while packing/unpacking at the start and end of holidays and for cleaning.  Another company insuring a friends van of about the same age/value (in the same area) are saying hitch lock, wheel locks and tracker.  The position could quite easily be reversed in another area.

We have always found the Caravan Club very good and reasonably priced.  I felt they were very fair and helpful when we had our van stolen.  (I have said this before too.)

In the end, the best thing is to get different quotes from different companies, together with details of their security requirements.  Don't be afraid to ask them many questions i.e what security devices need to be in operation at a service station, or at a camp site, for example.  Hope this is helpful.

when i checked out for ours the c and cc came out the best price and as for security devices only required 2 wheel locks and a hitch lock,

when i phoned caravan guard the fact that we have 2 wheel locks one hitch lock tilt and leg locks aswell didnt matter, it must have a tracker too! next they will be wanting someone sleeping in it at all times!! the van is in a compound with cctv and 24 hr security also and in a few weeks times its going to indoor storage but that wasnt enough for caravan guard, oh well tuff they didnt get any business from me!

We were with CC last year and have just renewed with C&CCC who were considerably cheaper this year for exactly the same cover /excesses. When we changed the van we were with CC and they just adjusted the direct debit accordingly. From what I could gather shopping around most insurers require security devices and discounts are generally greater the more you have.

Another point (I think I've probably made this elsewhere too).  If you have new for old cover, remember to have the van insured for the amount it would cost to buy/replace the van at todays list prices and not just the amount the caravan is worth.  Also remember to consult the list prices for the new vans every year just before renewal and increase your insurance accordingly.  I really would hate for people to be caught out if their van is stolen, heaven forbid.

I am getting a new van in February. I have also had quotes from quite a few companies, the CC has so far come out the best at £372. Caravan guard with all of the security devices included came out at £536. I am fairly sure where I will be going.
