Hi all
On my abbey freestyle 2004 there is a draining tap (in line)next to the water heater for draining the water out in winter,Can any of you guys or girls tell me what position it has to be to drain the water out and hopefully stop me having to change another tap on the 1st trip out next year.
thanks in anticipation
Tim

Different make of van but probably same principle - tap vertical will drain. Mine can be seen running underneath the van. Also each sink tap should be up in centre position to fully drain
Don't forget to refill water heater next season before turning it on or you will have to replace that!

Just a small query mallett61, do you not drain your hot water tank once you leave a site?

Also make sure you drain the hose on the shower and leave that tap open in the middle position. I would also ask the same as G7ACU, as not draining the tank after each trip means you are carrying quite a bit of additional weight around. If you do forget to refil before switching the heater on it should have a safety cutout button which you would have to reset.

If you trip the thermal overload on the water heater, drain if required, and refill with cold water and the trip resets itself. I always drain the water heater before travelling and make sure both tanks on the loo are empty.
I also leave sink and shower taps open to aid draining,
Have a routine of what to do before travelling and try not to get distracted from it,check and check again.
Hope I'm not teaching you to 'suck eggs' but a few things I have picked up since starting towing.

we do the same as you guys ,drain the taps and shower , lift the under seat drain tap to vertical and open all the taps to centre position before we leave a site then any water has cleared before we get home. any water in the tank can be seen draining under the van and any from the taps goes in the waste master. atb Bill

Glad it's not me having gone mad then, thought I'd mis-read the post.
In addition to the extra weight, water in tanks is an unstable comodity so any towing should ideally be done with empty tanks, as per the other responses.

Many thanks for the replys
I thought i drained the system by running the taps till water stopped flowing out,But i had to replace a tap because of frost damage on the 1st trip out this year,It was the service guy who told me about the draining tap. On my last van you undid a screw like plug on the outside of the van and this let the water out.

I open the drain plug before we leave a site and don't close it again until next time we pitch. Is this (leaving it open) right, wrong or indifferent?
Regards, Brian

straight up for drain
Hi,
that is the drain for the Truma Water Heater, but I think not what the OP asked about. On the Swift Group vans there are also a pair of pipes (one red, one blue) that lay flat to the floor.
To save space the taps are fixed "handed" so one will operate clockwise, and the other anti-clockwise.
If water runs out the bottom of the van...they are open...as I found out!
