Help me decide what to do! I am in the process of part exchanging my 2008 1.6 petrol Ford Focus for a 2008 1.8 115bhp diesel Ford Focus. I have arranged some finance and have £8000 budget left to buy a caravan. This is my first caravan and it will be for my husband and 2 boys age 2 and 5. We only have a smallish space on the drive (5.9m max length) and want to keep it lightweight so we don't need to run a bigger car. I have looked all around various caravan shops. I'm not keen on the UK vans - have no need for a grill/oven/microwave/TV etc but do want enough comfy bed space for the 4 of us in the medium term, a little kitchen and toilet/shower. I really liked the layout and look of the Sterckemans and Caravelairs I saw at Freedom caravans and if it were just the 2 of us I would be happy with a Freedom. I have found a 6 month old (nearly new) Caravelair Antares 425 with GRP side panels and roof at a dealer for £8000 including lots of extras (stabiliser, awning, gas, aquaroll, wastemaster, mirrors) and I like the layout and the 2 double dinettes which seem like a good use of space to me.
However, I am a little concerned about the quality / future damp etc and have been browsing the French forums where there are very mixed reviews of them.
Alternatively, I would love an Eriba (maybe a 430GT or Troll) but realise it will be about 10 years old at this budget and as well as that they are so hard to find. In addition, I would need to change the single bed to a bunk for the long term. We are considering the idea of going abroad to get one if we can't find one in this country. All of this seems like a lot of trouble when we could have an almost new caravan which ticks all of the boxes quite easily.
I guess my main reason for the Eriba is the build quality and the fact that they don't depreciate much so we would lose less money in the long run. Of course they look good too. But in some ways I like the idea of nearly new beds to sleep on rather than beds that have been used by other people for the past 10 years.
