Finally, after looking long and hard at many a van we've nailed down and made an offer on a private sale. Going back on Sunday for a second look to ensure everything works, and god willing hand over our hard earned.  Question is, do I hand over a cheque and come back after it's cleared the sellers account or pay hard cash and seal the deal on the spot. Either way has pro's and con's in my opinion. I've CRiS checked the van and the owner hasn't registered it from new. I suspect it was the dealers name on it. Paperwork, servicing and van seems all in order, I don't have any qualms about the seller. Looking forward to finally acquiring a van at long last!! :-) Any advice?

i would be asking why they havent had it cris checked? seems very strange to me, can they prove to you that it isnt involved in some finance agreement? and has that been paid for fully and cleared? what proof have you got that the caravan actually belongs to them?

They have recently moved house, it was a brand new estate I went too, so I suspect that this is the reason the address didn't match on the CRiS check.  The owner is a Policeman, that holds some water for me. They have the ownership paperwork. CRiS told me there was no outstanding Finance on it, as far as they can tell. But we didn't match addresses.

Sorry if I was confusing on my first post! It had been registered but the addresses didn't match. They wouldn't confirm if the name matched without the correct address.

you have managed to confuse again!!!

are you trying to say that the name on the cris and the name of the person your buying from arent the same? if so walk away!!!!! in fact run!

we have been at home and for 9 months looked at the house over the road using their new van, til one night the police arrived complete with wrecker and removed the van from the owners who had bought it in good faith off someone, it turned out the van had been stolen, in my book no cris documents that match up then i dont hand over any money its as simple as that.

ok just read your other reply, even tho he is a policeman or says he is, if the van is his then surely he can show you something with his identity at the previous address?  how do you know he is a policeman? be careful who you hand your cash over too

LOL! I'm waiting for the CRiS paperwork through the post before I make any judgement. The fact is, the family moved house, haven't updated their CRiS details to reflect the new address. It's no show stopper.  The problem lies with the fact that CRiS wouldn't confirm the surname of the owner because the current address I gave CRiS didn't match up, BECAUSE they've recently moved. They have the registration documents, if this looks fine then I'm not concerned.

Hi Arkaig

There are some people who haven't for one reason or another cris registered their van like me for instance. I have owned my van for 2 yrs now but still haven't cris registered It, some people on here will give me stick for this but hey I take the risk..If my van is stolen then I guess I'll be out of pocket. Will do It soon If I remember.

well I'll leave the concerns expressed above and return to your original question - cash or cheque. With cheque your risk is that he has the money & van for a while. I see this as dangerous. With cash (presumably a large amount) you  could possibly be robbed. could even be a set up job. From his point of view I would also be concerned about forgeries. There is a lot out there.

You could use a bank draft. Buy it over the counter. hand it to him and take the van.

As Gordon is now backing the banks he can have no concern over the bank draft (unless forged of course)

If he is a policeman can he show you his warrant card?

Sounds ok to me.
Use your instinct.
I took cash to buy ours. CRIS matched ok, no finance showing. Thought of a cheque / online bank transfer but wanted to be sure.
