In the past have taken our bikes in our sprinter van along with our tent and camping gear. Now we have a caravan with Land Cruiser so need to transport 5 bikes; 2 adult and 3 kids bikes (for kids aged 11, 8 and 5)
OH wants to put ALL the bikes in my nice clean caravan (which is a twin axle) as he doesn't want the weight on the back of the car. I'm horrified at the thought of all the bikes in the van - just think of the oil, grease not to mention mud!! So I'm looking at racks for the roof of the car? Probably would be ok to put the littlest bike in the caravan - we can always take a tarp or plastic sheeting to keep the van clean I suppose.
So is he right to be trying to keep the weight away from the hitch?
If you have a Landcruiser I guess you could put a couple of bikes on a towbar mounted carrier without noseweight probs, but you would have to be careful on sharp turns. Generally ok in normal driving tho.
You could also put 2 bikes on a motorhome type bike rack on back of caravan, you would need to check that there are mounting points tho. Many will disagree with rear mounted bike racks on caravans but plenty of continental caravanners seem to use them without problem.

We used roof mounted racks for the first time this year. I had always found the thought of them being on tha roof a little worrying but they are perfectly secure up there. Its a bit of a pain getting on top of a 4X4 but worth it in my opinion as they are well out of the way.
We have a Witter towbar mounted bike rack that works well with two adult bikes. As has been said the Land Cruiser should not have an issue with noseweight. We have a Sorento which is not as tall as the Land Cruiser and we would struggle to lift bikes on and off a roof mount rack, so something to think about. I have also heard stories of bikes on roofs sapping fuel economy.
I would think that the fuel economy is about sapped with having the caravan on the back. I wonder how much additional damage bikes on the roof would do to the fuel economy?
Thinking about the fact that I have 4 bikes - I wonder if the tow bar mounting would be too much - that's a lot of bikes. Can you get roof racks that take 4 bikes?
There is a gadget that you put in the caravan that stands the bikes up safely and allows you to position them in the best place for noseweight. etc. Cant remember the name tho! Sorry! (It's on a previous thread perhaps in "Equipment"). You could therefore put the two adult bikes in the 'van and the two kids on a rack on the towbar?

It's called Carabike (or something like that) but there have been mixed reviews on how good it is...
I haven't yet taken bikes away but I plan to put them in the van - use a couple of cargo poles through the spokes and then some tarp/old sheets/pillows over them, to protect the cupboards/chairs etc. (I'm already maxed out on the noseweight and those bike roof racks are damn expensive).

When we had our caravan we put bikes on the roof did try them inside once but even stopping for one night means all bikes have to come out. We had a frontera and used the caravan step to help us reach the roof. We put smallest bikes in the inside and larger ones on the outside less lifting we also found when packing up you can put bikes on roof the night before if your after an early start.
I dont know where you go on your hols but if away in the van and want to take the kids out for the day you can still take bikes on car if in van they have to stay there.
We're looking at buying the roof mounted bike carrier, but that was because we thought we couldn't get a towbar mounted bike carrier and use it while towing the caravan too.
Is that not right?
If you can get a towbar mounted bike carrier (2 adult bikes) that can be used while towing the caravan - can anyone recommend any?
Ah! just thought why we have this problem - ours is a removable towbar - I think is why we can't have a bike carrier on it and tow the c'van?
Cant reccomend any but have seen loads of vans with them on but just check your noseweight first as a bike can be heavy plus the frame plus the caravan i know it can be done but just check before hand
Oh yes! so it does - but it pushes the weight even further back towards the hitch - surely that would make the nose weight too heavy? Also it might impede on cornering with the caravan on the back perhaps?
