The spare wheel mounted carrier would indeed protrude too much. It would probabley hit the caravan on cornering & you can't fit a towbar carrier because of the spare wheel.

You will get no more than 3 on't roof, I think, but you won't know until you try.

Not sure how heavy 5 bikes and 5 people are but watch you don't overload the poor old landcruiser.

We put 4 bikes on the roof. They are pretty close together, but at least they can hold each other up.

We have toured all over the UK, Europe and Irelend and they have always stayed in place. The only disaster was when the bell rattled free on my sons bike. We heard it bounce off the roof, but it took a couple of days before we realised what it was!.

Can you buy racks that take 4 on the roof or do I have to ask my engineering hubby to make something? I think either 3 or 4 on the roof would be ok - we can always put the two smaller bikes in the caravan or even in the boot of the car?
Thank goodness we stopped at 3 kids!

Bike racks are individual, Thule are probabley the best but £50 each I think, so you would need 4 + a set of roof bars.

Hi Pippa

We have been using 2 Witter towbar carriers over a number of years.  There is a Witter version with a bend in the vertical bar to allow it to fit on cars with rear-mounted spare wheels.  We used one of these on our Vauxhall Monterey (Isuzu Trooper) and carried 4 bikes.  Since we got our Kia Sorento a couple of years ago we reverted to our previous Witter carrier with a straight bar.

Regarding  clearance between the 'van and car this is not a problem during normal driving but one has to be careful when reversing or other tight maneouvres on difficult pitches.  After 2 seperate incidents when the jockey wheel handle buckled a bike wheel we now remove the bikes when doing tight maneouvres.

We have found the Witter carriers to be very convenient to use.  The bikes can easily be lifted on we did use roof bike racks on previous estate cars but even at that height it was a big effort getting the bikes up there.  There is little chance of damaging the car paintwork as there is with some rear-mounted carriers - we use foam pipe insulation as additional padding between the bikes and between the car and bikes.  The Witter carrier comes with a fixed loop on its  bottom bracket, that is bolted to the towbar, and we secure the bikes with our D locks when they're on the car.

We have towed thousands of mile around the UK and the Continet using these carriers with no problems apart from the 2 incidents previously mentioned.  I would not put the bikes in the 'van.  Apart from possible damage we often stop-off enroute and try to keep the caravan clear so that we can quickly settle down for the night.

I hope this helps - Witter do have a website if you want to check them out more.

When we where looking at cycle carriers I was after the spare wheel hanging type for the back of my vitara, but on looking at them there may be a problem with cornering as a few others have said. I bought a thule double pack (only 2 of us see) & a set of roof bars all in around £70 if I remember right. My vitara is lower than your landcruiser but I bought one of those folding stools & keep it in the boot on this I can reach perfectly well. You could always use the caravan step if need be this may be a bit taller than a folding one.
When we had the kids we used to carry 4 bikes in the van, the damage they caused, even though it was an old van never again.
On the mpg note I find very little difference whether the bikes are on top or not. The carrier also gives a secure place to keep your bikes over night when on site.

Hi Tim & Cary
That looked really interesting - I had a good trawl but I think the overhang of the spare wheel on the landcruiser is too deep - all the sites that allow you to search by vehicle give no results for the landcruiser. I should go and measure it but its chucking it down outside so I'm not going to!

Thanks Scruffy on Tour - I think this is the route we will have to go down - I'm sure hubby will have no probs getting them on the roof - he used to be a steeplejack you see!

Gosh it will make it very high though - much higher than the caravan. Will it be a problem on the ferries / eurotunnel I wonder?

Hi Pippa

Have a look here

http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/cycle_carriers/witter_cycle_carriers.aspx

The "108" for vehicles with large spare wheel overhang might suit you.  You could give witter a call regarding suitability for your specific vehicle- I have found them very knowledgeable and helpful in the past.  I'm, unfortunately, not on commission from Witters by the way!!.

Regarding height of roof mounted bikes it shouldn't be a problem on a ferry as long as you declare the CORRECT height - they'll probably put you on the deck with the HGVs.  It does bring back memories from many years back when we had roof mounted cycle carrier on a, I think Brittany, ferry.  This particular ferry had a mezzanine type car deck above our deck, in the centre, with a higher roofed area around the edge of the deck where we were parked.  When we came leave the HGV in front of us had broken down and I well remember a young ship's officer waving us out via the lower-roofed area.  I turned up the wing mirrors to check height clearance and was concerned to see that the roof had spun the wheels on the bike - we just managed to clear it!!

Regards

Tim

Doesn't that mean you will pay a lot more for the ferry/tunnel?

Ferry isn't a problem when you are towing as you are on the "tall" deck anyway.

Tunnel charges no more for 'car with roofbox or bikes' than 'car'
