I have an Electrolux RM4271 with the following power spec.
230v: 125 Watts
12v: 120 Watts
LPG.

This is my query.

In the past I have read quotes from various campers that whilst using a fridge on the move on 12v the fridge will not get down to the required temperature but only maintain a temerature that's been achieved from 230v or gas. However If 12v operation is only 5 watts less than the 125 watts usage on 230v surely the fridge should operate almost as good on 12v as it does on 230v (hook up).. Can somebody please shed some light on this for me.

Many thanks

Steve

I have one in our C/Van,I put in on 240v with EHU from the house the night befor we go away, then fill with what we are taking from the house fridge, then I switch to 12v while travelling,to be honest I have not noticed any differance in temp from the two settings, the freezer box is still frozen on arriving, then connect the EHU lead and turn back to 240v setting, then do the same going home as we did comming to the site.

Yes pete..We'd do the same as you but unfortunately our van is stored in a compound without ehu and we don't have a drive so It's out of the question. I'm currently trying to fix the fridge so that it will run on gas.

Many thanks

Steve

We cool our at home on EHU but it never is as cold on 12v. I understood they are always running flat out to maintain a temperature on 12v.

We used to cool our fridge at home on a hook-up, but now it's in storage it's impossible.  When we pack the fridge we make sure everything going in is as cool as possible, and take a couple of litre packs of orange juice, which we've previously frozen, plus a bottle of milk which has been frozen.  This helps keep the fridge temperature down, and we've never had a problem with food spoiling, even in very hot temperatures when travelling down through France.

A typical journey, for us,  involves leaving home Friday mid-afternoon, and probably the next time we hook-up will be Saturday evening around 5.00 pm.  Food is fine, even though the fridge will have been opened to get food out for breakfast, a mid-morning coffee with milk (sometimes not thawed even after twelve hours), and lunchtime salad and meats.  In the meantime the fridge is on 12v whilst we're travelling to Dover, off during the ferry crossing, on again for perhaps an hour whilst we travel down to an overnight stop (with no hook-up) and then on 12v again for Saturday, from about 8.00 am.

I can't imagine that food spoiling would be a problem in this country if you did something similar.

Our caravan fridge is 12v only.

It is a Waeco 50L compressor fridge and it gets down to temperature in 10 minutes.

Its average consumption on 12v is 40 watts.

I do not doubt you figures but 120 watts on 12v seems awfully high to me.

120 watts does seem high doesn't It I thought that myself but that's exactly what the electrolux label states on the side of the fridge..Now we know why the fridge will only work on 12v whilst the car engine is running. The fridge draws 10 amps meaning It would only run for 8 hrs max from an 80ah 12v leisure battery If it was constantly working to bring the temperature down.

Aha, sorry, I misread your letter and I may be talking through a hole in my hat, but my take on this is;- .

On 12v you will be drawing 10A but on 230v you will only be drawing about 0.5A.

I would imagine that to get your fridge down to temp would require more amps than the engine alternator can give you and so the fridge is only capable of "ticking over" while on 12v.

Whereas, on 230v it can draw more amps to get it down to temp and then go into tick over.

There is also another factor to consider, the conductor size and length, if not big enough there could be considerable volt drop at the fridge end.

Saxo's hit the nail on the head, 120w at 12v means the current draw is 10A at 12v, the cable down the car to the socket must be man enough to carry that current or the voltage drop is too great.

If however the cables big enough and you have good connections through the socket/plug and heavy enough cable from there to the fridge, then it will freeze everything solid on 12v, simple as that!

You have a minimum of 40A at 14v+ on tap from the alternator, given a suitable sized positive cable, doubling up the fridge earth on the 12S using the spare brown wire should deliver 12v+ at the fridge and it working fine

arc systems,
this is assuming your car & caravan plugs and sockets are in good condition and are not corroded, and your car alternator is in tip top condition. Alot of fridges on 12v cause the sockets to overheat and melt so as you already mentioned while you are making sure your cables are up to scratch, clean and lubricate your plugs and sockets. If you ignore this advice you could end up with damaged plugs/sockets and (even worse lol) warm fridge, warm food and the biggest problem - warm beer!! Is this why the new 13 pin system is seen to be superior - eg better electric supply for your fridge and leisure batery while travelling?

Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!

If the car or caravan are pre 1999 the 12S plug earth is only pin 3 white. In 1999 pin 7 black was also earthed. This will dramatically reduce voltage drop and improve fridge performance on 12V.

Pin 7 was previously unused so you could have the mod carried out.

To stop the pin 7 from overheating/or melting, connect pin 6 and pin 2 together and pin 7 and pin 5 together on the 12s socket on the caravan, this gives you 2 live feeds and 2 earths for the fridge, make sure you use heavy enough wire for the connections, iv,e done this for the last 5 years and no problems with pin 7 melting.

Steve if you cannot pre cool your fridge like most people do. Then my advice to you is to get a 2 litre plastic bottle fill it full of water or squash put it in the freezer at home and freeze and just before you leave put it in the fridge once you have packed it. At a minimum its a posh coolbox - job done.
