We are lucky enough to be able to keep the van on the drive with hookup.

We use the van all year round when work permits. We leave the fridge on all the time and sometimes especially in winter leave a convector heater on inside the van with all the inside doors open for an afternoon or so to air things off.

Is leaving a heater on for the odd afternoon likely to reduce the risk of damp?

can not do any harm,as i use a dehumidifier on EHU timer for so many hours a day (6).do not like the idea of leaving all doors a cupboards open as they can warp, best they stay closed in my opinion a new lock is cheaper.EHU keeps battery charged too.not to be rude but it will not stop any leakage in the rails or windows.many think a humidifier is a waste of time but it works for us.some say heating induces humidity,so there is no solid advice.

I cannot see how providing heat can prevent damp in the form of water penetration. This is the form of damp that I think most of us are concerned about. Some may argue that by creating a temperature differential you are more likely to create expansion/contraction movement in your seals

You may dry out damp air but in this case that air moisture must land somewhere as condensation. I think a decent dehumidifier would do this job better as the moisture from the air will land in the dehumidifier tank but I think some dehumidifiers as rubbish.

I don't use either heater or dehumidifier and its ok. Take out bedding & clothing, leave ehu connected for battery & occasional cleaning etc

Thanks for the reply. I only meant the door to the bathroom and the bedroom separator not all the cupboard doors.Left the last van on EHU all year round and over 2 years had no trouble with the leisure battery.

Is the dehumidifier you use one of those long cylinder types about 3 feet long that go inside upright pianos? I wonder if it helps with overnight condensation on site?

I suppose inside is more cold than anything in the winter. Any views on leaving the fridge on mains all the time while its parked up?

I tend to to agree with the others and wouldn't think the heater helps necessarily; it could be argued that it would encourage condensation during the colder days.

As for the fridge running, I honestly wouldn't think it's any benefit. We keep our van at home and left on EHU via a timer which has always ran a treat. We usually switch the timer to permanently on and put the fridge on a day or so before using the van to pre-chill etc. If your using the van most weekends it might be worth leaving the fridge on during the week, but anything more than that, I'd be inclined to switch it off.

If you leave a heater on you might get a bit condensation but it won't matter. Damp is only dangerous if its caused by failed seals causing the structure to rot.

I wouldn't be leaving the fridge on permanently. The heating elements don't last forever & replacement requires removal of fridge.

hi no point really, ours goes on two days before we go all other times it is left wide open to prevent mould forming. the dehumidifier is a small one bought from woolworth and cost £20,as said its on a timer for 6 hours a day as is the battery charge.like this one
