hello,i`ve just bought a 1997 2 birth elddis in good nick for just under £2000.do i need insure it.do i have to inform my car insurance to tow it.thanks
You do not have to insure your van. its up to you. there is no legal requirement to.
I would recommend you check your car policy documents to ensure that you are covered to tow but I doubt very much that your car insurance will cover the value of the caravan

I would insure it even if it is for third party cover as I would regard this as almost essential, however comprehensive is better unless you are quite happy to lose £2000.
if you dont have seperate insurance for your caravan the only time it will be covered is when its coupled up to the car or possibly if you keep it on the drive at home. other than that your on your own
worst case scenario if pitched or pitching , and your caravan runs away and damages other caravans or vehicles you could end up with thousand of pounds liability

Car insurance doesn't cover damage to the caravan..
i have seen two run away at camp sites without damage caused to others but it could have been different if they hit another van.then you pay.you must inform your car insurance.mine was no extra cost.the rear of my van just caught a car wing turning right at 2 hph and the car insurance paid out £1000 for a new wing and respray.it was a new car.the van was ok no damage.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I have never bothered insuring ours. Its not worth it on an older van IMHO
you are covered liability wise if any damage occurs while hooked up to your ca, it is unlikely to cause any damage to property etc while its legs are down when not hitched. Of course it could get stolen/damaged but you take your chances
It used to cost us around £70 a year to insure our older Swift van....insured through the C&CC. Like all insurance, you have to weigh up the risks but I personally wouldn't tow a van without insurance on it. After all, the van is still worth around £2,000 so for £70, I didn't think it was worth taking the chance.

Car insurance doesn't cover damage to the caravan..
hi dragon ...ive had two claims in the past on my vehicle insurance neither have been a problem re claiming for the caravan one was a total replacement and the other was damage incured by a tyre blowout if anything the only prob was that the accessor knew nothing of caravan values

Nigel /speedy.Please let us know your car insurers name. most car insurers will only cover the caravan for 3rd party damage & only when attached to the tow car
Sparksy .It's also advisable to tell you insurers that you have fitted a tow ball,as it is a"modification"& if they are not notified it could give them a reason NOT to payout in the case of a claim on your car insurance

And if it becomes detached from the car and causes an accident, the car's third party will not pay out. The end result is that you woudl have to pay out. Have you queried it with the insurer of the car that you are covered for liability while towing a caravan? Will they pay out if you have a snake which then results in an accident?.
Old Chap.....i did say in an earlier post that the caravan is only covered by your vehicle insurance when its hooked up to the towbar...otherwise some house insurance will cover breakins to caravans stored at home..both claims were with different companies
I must admit - if I was on site and a caravan rolled off its pitch on to mine and it wasnt insured I would be pretty Pi**ed off with that person. Let me put it into perspective, I only had the van a couple of weeks and couple of Irish blokes decided they wanted my van. In the process of them stealing it and me stopping them. They damaged / creased the offside lower panel at a cost of £3.5K. Now if your caravan causes that sort of damage would you pay up if not insured.
