I have my caravan permanently pitched on a site. In the winter months it is put in storage on the same site. I have taken my battery out (it was new in April this year) I will put it back in the van on march 1st 2010 when the site reopens. Do i need to charge the battery over the winter months in my garage, or can i just put it back in the van and connect the Electric hookup and charge it that way on march 1st.

Buy yourself a cheap (£12.99ish) electronic charger from the likes of Aldi/Lidl.
You can hook it up and leave it all winter. It will monitor your battery and when it discharges slightly, and they all do, it will top it up again. They are great value for money.
You will prob find some posts on this topic if you do a "search".

According to the article in this months C&CC you should put a smart charger on it but according to the prices they quoted they looked expensive (as most things are in C&CC) I would charge it occasionally for a while.

Is it true though that if you leave it in the van on permanent EHU through the winter that you have to leave a 12v light on or something similar to stop the Battery from overcharging?
May old caravan was fine just left plugged in throughout winter, but that had a Zig unit fitted and sorted itself out more or less.

If you're fortunate enough to be able to do that, why not have a couple of low wattage bulbs on a timer as well. A little bit of heat and also a bit of security.
Mine sits in the shed connected to a Halfords charger on a time switch for an hour a day. Can't see that that will overcharge it, and a lot less cheaper than one of those "intelligent" chargers.
I have mine on the bench in the garage connected to an Aldi smart chargere, £12.99 had it a few years now bought another a few weeks back to put on my motorbike. I used to alternate between the two batteries every 3/4 weeks, over the winter months they are both left on.
