Hi all.Harking back to our last outing,i got talking to a seasonal pitch holder who said he wished that the site owners would consider installing cctv around the site due to the rise in theft from vans and violent incidents he had seen recently.(His bike was nicked)I wouldnt like this at all.Ive seen cameras on gates on sites etc but never cameras that could zoom in while at your van .We like all kinds of sites and use coastal and commercial as well as quiet ones and have never really seen any nasty incidents to warrant full cctv coverage. It wouldnt feel right knowing someone could zoom right into your awning to see how much wine you were guzzling incase you start a fight later would it?Do you think this is the shape of things to come.Id welcome members views on this.thanks

I think you have to accept big brother is watching you wherever you go, cctv is everywhere & everything about you is on computer. When you shop in Tesco & get your points they are getting info on your shopping habits, when you show your passport to immimigration all your info from the microchip comes up on screen. The cops would love everybodies DNA at birth.
I really don't care anymore, Ive nowt to hide, if anybody wants to spy on me in me tent they are welcome if they are that interested, if it prevents crime, why not?
If you've done nowt wrong, you've nowt to fear, etc, etc.

I am neither advocating nor criticising such an idea, but perhaps if you were the one to have your possessions stolen or the one that had been at the receiving end of a drunk's fist, perhaps you would be more inclined to agree that campsites are no longer the safe havens that they once were.
There was a time when one could go away all day and know that no matter what you left lying about would be there when you returned. That is no longer the case and chains and padlocks, even around things like water butts, are now the norm.
More and more caravan sites are ruined at the weekends by those who consider them to be the ideal place for the drunken party that they do not wish to hold "on their own doorstep", but have no consideration for other campers.
As people's attitudes to "proper and acceptable behaviour" changes, so too must steps also change to protect the innocent and if that means a "big brother" attitude, then so be it.
I would be more inclined to give up camping/caravanning because I got my possessions stolen or got beaten up than I would because some site owner could, if he wished, peer into my awning to see me doing whatever in there.

I see your point lobey but i was wandering if the system would be used for more dubious reasons by some operator with no 'morals' if you get my meaning.Just going off topic for a mo,ive got someone to make an awning to fit our freedom following your advice.thanks lobey!

it will be a sad day for camping/caravanning if theres cctv watching every move on site. we already have more cctv than any other country apparently. fine, have it on reception, site entrances etc but to use it to peer into peoples property is wrong and i thought illegal? if you have cctv at your home its not supposed to cover anybody elses property..
why cant we just sort out our screwed up society and do away with the need for extra security in the first place??
It wouldnt bother me at all if they have nothing better to do !!!!!
on a plus note for cctv my cousins hubby fell over and hi tthe back of his head (required major brain surgery) cctv saw it happen and were able to call emergency services to assist him had they not seen him fall he would not be with us today
not a problem for me,we have nosy neighbours and grateful for it as they watch our van and house and ring me if any problems arise.strange thing is our friend slipped in a petrol station and banged the back of her head when filling up with petrol.when we said a claim would be made ALL CCTV tapes for that day had gone missing.this proves they only work in favour of the installer.they use them at secure storage sites but when one is stolen no film is available.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Such a shame, I've always considered Caravan Sites to be some of the safest places for your property filled with loads of like minded nice people - another illusion shattered!!
CCTV along the fence line and other generally watching over the park would be very nice as it woudl make us feel very secure. Also inappropriate behaviour by parents, children could be monitored.
The thing about CCTV is that it is NOT monitored most of the time so you don't see crime \ insidents happening. Just have a tape record (if you are lucky) that can identify people.
The tape qualitiy is invariably not up to standard for a successful prosecution anyway. Just another intrussion in the lives of innocent people. The "If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear" argument is not valid. These cameras are not reducing crime to any significant degree.
