Going away in our Ranger 620/6 tonight so I've just plugged in the electric to get fridge (and heater!) going. The smoke/gas alarm is doing that annoying beep every so often which I presume tells me the battery needs changing. Trouble is, I can't see how to get the darned thing open. I've phoned my local service centre (cos it was only serviced last week) and they said it should just flip open but I can't see where. Anyone any ideas? It's the alarm that came as standard with the van - just near the front door and with 3 lights in a horizontal row with a small black test button on the same row.
I dont know your particular unit but those I know do just flip open. They are hinged at one side; quite often with an arrow embossed in the plastic by the catch.[opposite the hinge].
If not clear then look using a face mirror to find where the hinge is located and prise open opposite this. Often the catch will be stiff, particularly in this cold weather.
To avoid damage do it when van is warm.
Best replace with a good quality battery [9volt usually] as they are initially fitted with questionable quality ones.

Our house alarms are hinged at the bottom and the catch is at the top. To open them we just grip the outer case at the top and give a quick tug. The lid then drops out and down to reveal the alarm and battery box.
Thanks for all your replies. It's a rectangle shape so not much turning to be done. I know which kind you're referring to Lobey but it's nothing like that. It has actually stopped beeping now - I wonder if it has a rechargeable battery and hooking up to the mains has done the trick. If it happens again I'll try and take a pic of it cos I appreciate all your suggestions.
Its prob stopped as the van has got warm and put a little charge in it (remember when you used to put your batteries on the rad when you were young!).
Sounds like it needs to be replaced.
------------- Enjoying caravanning, realising what an expensive hobby it is and spending the family’s inheritance before they can get their hands on it!

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Ta for all your replies. Turns out I was giving duff info (sorry). It's the gas alarm which is a separate item to the smoke alarm (doh, didn't realise the smoke alarm was at the top of the 'wall' panel whereas this is about 3 or 4 inches off the floor). It's actually wired in - not sure if there's a battery in it or not. It behaved itself while we were away so fingers crossed all ok again. Only issue we had was the dog decided to curl up on the doormat and leaned on the test button. I know collies are clever but I didn't think she'd do a safety check before she settled down for the night
