Hello we have tried out our new van last weekend. The waterpump was quite noisy inside the van, not noisy from the outside as the pump is situated under the seats.

I have read the problems of the man with the ongoing battle (sorry forgot his name). But i was wondering if anyone else has a low rumbling noise when using the pump. Dont really know whether to get in touch with dealers or not.

It is a flojet pump.

Nicola

We had a new Swift van in the middle of the year and its the first one we have had with an internal pump. It is undoubtedly more noisy that than the external type but I have to say we have just got used to it. I suppose one way to go would be to build a box of insulating foam over the pump which would absorb some of the sound.

Yes, we had the same with the same pump on our Sterling. There is not much that you can do I'm afraid.

Any vibrations from the pump and the pipes are amplified by the floor of the van. I think your pump will be mounted vertically, this is supposed to cut down on the vibration, but also means it is impossible to adjust the pressure switch setting on it without actually removing the pump.   If it is floor mounted then you can try fitting rubber under the mount, and not screw it down too tight.

To cut down on noise caused by the pipes being fixed to the floor is more difficult, we have not tried that yet but are wondering if some foam under them might help.

Is it just the pump noise, or are you also getting pulsing of the water and the pump turning off/on rapidly? The solution to that is to fit an accumulator/surge damper.

The pump could also be noisy because you have air in it.

We have changed our pump, fitted an accumulator etc, it is better but still quite noisy, like David, we have just got used to it.

But we are still thinking along the lines of building some sort of baffle round it.

surely the caravan manufacturers should be doing more to insulate the noise from these onboard pumps ?? we pay enough for our vans so why should we have to do the job on their behalf ?

I think the trouble is that it bother ssome people more than others. How long is a pump on for, usually seconds. We both shower in the van so the pump is running much longer and I can't say the noise is that intrusive. If you couldn't hear it you would think there was something wrong!

I don't want to get involved in this again, but I suggest you read this;

Our pump noise was sorted eventually, and Swift know what the problem is. It'll never be a silent system, but what we had was.........welll, read it yourself.

If it's any consolation, we have the same problem with noisy water pumps over here in North America.  Every time I turn on a tap, the whole trailer rumbles and vibrates for a few seconds.  I always feel bad if someone's trying to sleep.  Our 2000 watt Honda generator makes less noise than our water pump!

I posted on your original thread, but have been away on holiday more recently so went back to read what the problem turned out to be. However you had so many things changed I am a little confused. Was the main problem the type of piping used?

I would be interested to know the type/make of pipe that Swift recommended.

Yes. According to the engineer the pipes were flexing and kinking when they got warmed up, hence the initial tests showed they were OK as they were tested cold only. Where they were clipped to the floor at the point at the wheel arch they were not curved smoothly, but forced into too tight a bend.

When we ran the system to begin with everything seemed fine, but as we used the hot water things got worse, until by day two the pipes had kinked so bad the noise was really awful.

Swift knew about the problem with the pipes, and a few other problems, but failed to let the engineers at the various dealerships know. All was revealed when our engineer attended a training session at the water system suppliers, where he found a few other issues had been known of but, if not exactly hidden, at least not brought to the dealer's attention.

Swift knew about the baffle problem (and attendant draughts) if the fridge had been out, but again failed to notify the dealers. Our engineer asked why they don't just pass on information to help solve customer's problems, but I guess that'll not have gone down too well.

We'll need to keep the Sterling we bought as we'l lose too much selling it, but rest assured we'll never buy another Swift product. Best of luck!

Solution? New, different, pipe material and unclip the pipes from the floor where they bend too tightly.

We had a noisy Whale pump on my new 2006 Bailey Indiana and we got it replaced, I did have to pay Whale £25 but it was fitted FOC.  I thought they had resolved this problem!

Thanks for the explanation Jake.

So, does anyone know whether are Swift now using a different type of pipe in their vans?

And is there any difference between what is used for hot pipes and for cold pipes?

Ours are coloured blue and red, but our dealer only sells blue, they reckon there is no difference.

We found the pump in our new Pageant a lot more noisey than the old external pump we had before. I asked my mate who works for a caravan dealer his opinion, he suggested mounting the pump on a piece of rubber to absorb the vibration. We haven't tried it so have no idea if it'll work but we'll do it before we use the van again next spring.

We have done that, it does help a bit. We now reckon it is the pipes that are causing some of the noise.

Don't give up until Swift sort thr problem out. They know about the issues with the noisy system, but if you don't care about it neither will they!

Swift have the money, you have the problem.
