I am in a quandary.  In my haste to book the ferry to France through the CC & C I did not check my current caravan policy thinking it ran out in June.  When booking the ferry I booked the personal, medical and motoring insurance as I thought it better to have insurance under one umbrella.  Several days later looking through my Caravanguard policy which covers theft and damage etc I saw that it covers 90 days european travel but I nothing that shows what that cover entails.  Doh!  It actually runs out two days after we return from France but checking with the CC & C , the cover only starts with the holiday.  If I cancel the Caravanguard now the caravan is not protected before June .  I only have 5 days left to cancel the CC & C.  and I know that you are not supposed to have more than one insurance as they will fight with each other as to who pays out.  I'm thinking that I should cancel just the motoring bit of the CC & C but worry that Caravanguard may not be as good at recovery. What would you do?

Carol

If you have booked the c&cc insurance just for the holiday period the bit that covers your car/caravan is presumabley just breakdown/recovery insurance. This has nothing to to do with your normal car & caravan insurances, you still need them. you say your caravan insurance does indeed cover you for 90 days continental travel & you need to check your car insurance does as well.

As well as your normal car/caravan insurances its also best to have breakdown/recovery insurance as well, which is what you will have taken out with c&cc.

Hi, I would be surprised if your CaravanGuard policy includes motoring breakdown!   because the towcar would not normally be covered under the caravan insurance.

We always take out separate European Breakdown insurance and medical/personal cover - there isn't really any overlap between this and our caravan insurance (which also includes European use).

The European use clause, just means the caravan is covered for the same eventualities in Europe as it is in the UK, not extra cover such as breakdown of the towcar!

Carol.

You need to ascertain the level of cover offered by caravanguard. It may only cover the basics.

When abroad you have to consider the costs of repatriation of your car, caravan and passengers in the event of an emergency as opposed to caravan theft and damage cover alone.

I am sure that your policy will say 'upto' 90 days cover and as with all policies this will expire at the time the policy expires.

With regards to medical cover, this country has reciprocal arrangements for health care in Europe. You can obtain the European health insurance card free from the DHSS. The forms are available at the post office.

This will only get you treatment the public health
hospitals. If you are happy with the public facilities in the country you are visiting, then all well and good. you may consider that you wish to have the option of private medical cover as well.

Don't forget that in most cases your UK car insurance reverts to 3rd party only when abroad and that you can obtain a green card form them to up the cover to fully comprehensive. They may charge you for this.

Double indemnity is not usually problem, for instance your home insurance may also cover the theft of some items also covered on your caravan policy.

My advice is make sure you know the terms and conditions of all of the policies and make your choice accordingly.

Hope this helps

John

Provided your car insurance & your separate caravan insurance both state they include continental coverage(usually 30 or 90days but some like Saga cover all yr)in all the countries stated on the policy(usually all EU+Switzerland/Croatia/Andorra)then your cover is comprehensive in those countries, you don't need a green card.

If the op is talking about insurance obtained only to cover the trip isself this will presumabley be breakdown/recovery insurance which is a separate issue from the comprehensive cover on car & caravan taken out on an annual basis.

Thank you everyone for your help.  From what you say the Carefree insurance seems to be just for the holiday and as I'm not certain what Caravanguard does cover abroad and I would be happier covered for all eventualities,  I will retain the Caravanguard insurance as well.   Insurance is certainly an expensive hidden cost of the holiday, I was hoping I might have been able to save the 100 quid on the motoring!

Cheers

Carol

You need to check this, Carol, a phone call to both your car insurers & caravan insurers will tell you if you have comprehensive continental cover. Normaly unless you request it you won't so you will need to add that on for an extra charge.

It is also advisable to have continental breakdown/recovery & recovery of vehicle/caravan back to UK in event of accident/serious breakdown. You can also buy this cover along with your car insurance, but you have probabley just bought it from c&cc in the form of single trip cover. You need to find out exactly what this cover provides.

It is inadvisable to drive on the continent without adequate breakdown/recovery insurance.

I would agree that you need both policies you have taken out. Your regular caravan insurance will only cover the usual theft or damage in Europe, you need the C&CC one to cover any breakdowns of either car or caravan, eg. a flat tyre you need help to change. Do check that the C&CC policy covers for a breakdown affecting only the caravan.
And that your car cover in Europe is long enough.

We use the CC Red Pennant when we go abroad, but we still need our regular caravan insurance.

I thought the 'green card' doesn't exist anymore?

Well, it is certainly a minefield.  I have checked with the C&CC about the caravan only cover and it can't be a question asked that often as I had to wait several minutes for the advisor to consult with a colleague.  If the car and caravan are attached and the caravan wheel falls off you are covered as a unit, for standing alone did'nt think so.  So after all your help and suggestions, I am now keeping Caravanguard in case there is a problem in the standing alone situation abroad and for cover whilst in England or on the drive, with the single trip cover from C&CC that should get us and car/caravan home.  Just hope I don't need to contact either of them!

Cheers

Carol

Carol.....I don't think you have been told exactly the correct thing, or perhaps they did not understand what you meant.

You have 3 insurances involved here....

Car insurance......This will cover your car, plus any damage done to another car, caravan, person or property by your car and/or caravan while the caravan is being towed. It will not cover any damage to your caravan itself.

Caravan insurance.....This covers any damage, theft etc affecting your van at all times. Also any damage done to people or property by your van when it is not being towed.

The C&CC travel insurance......You need to read exactly what it says, but if this was CC Red Pennant this would cover .........medical expenses (if you have taken personal cover), cancellation and/or continuation of journey, recovery and roadside assistance should the car or caravan break down for any reason, repatriation of part or all of the outfit if required, and a few other things I cannot remember right now.

So if your caravan wheel fell off while being towed, they would recover you, assist with repairs etc, but would not pay for any actual damage to the van, this is down to your caravan insurance.

If something happened while the van was sited, the CC insurance would cover assisting with repairs, repatriation if necessary, but again not the cost of repairing any actual damage, again this would be down to your caravan insurance.

This is why you need both the Caravanguard insurance and the C&CC travel one.

Hope that helps! Insurance is often tricky to figure out.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for spelling it out.  I am happy that I have got the proper cover now.  I felt miffed when I thought I was paying twice for the european cover but the mist has finally cleared.  24 OH always leaves things like this to me as I am the "officey" one and he is the hands on manly jobs one,  but I made him read both policy documents and now he is very  very glad he leaves it to me.24

Cheers
