hi folkes can i get some ideas i have a 2008 xplore 474 (end fixed bed) we have problems keeping the nose weight down to 75kg for our citroen C5 which tows the van great so i dont want to change the car yet. we are getting to the point where we need to fit a mover on the van so this is going to mean more nose weight as i cant mount the mover behind the axel as the spare wheel is in the way also ill need to beef up the battery that is mounted under the front bunk.
My idea is to fit a battery box under the fixed bed just behind the axel then wire it to the control pannel via a sutable breaker mouted next to the battery.
Is this to simple or have i missed somthing

Chris, Caravans are designed to be able to hold the noseweight to the recommended weights by fitting battery boxes almost always in front of the axle, some are at the very front end. You will never see a battery box fitted by manufacturers behind the wheels as it would more than likely cause instability. There are different ways you can compensate this by loading your caravan just behind the axle, never at the very back of the van. If your caravan is under warranty I would certainly avoid doing any alterations and in the very worst case if you were to claim for an accident(heaven forbid) you might find the insurance company would not be interested.

Why do you need to "beef up the battery" because you are having a mover fitted? Our 85 aph battery manages well with our mover. Can you not move your spare wheel. We keep ours under the bottom bunk which is across the back of the caravan.

The Mover is best in front of the wheels, it gets less road spray there. It is so close to the axle I doubt it will alter the noseweight significantly.

I hear a lot of folks saying i should be able to get the nose weight down without having to take drastic mesures but the facts are 1x 7.5 kg gas bottle in the front locker 1x 85AH battery in the side locker all inside lockers forward of the axle empty and everything stored under rear bed and awning on the floor behind the axle still gives me anose weight around 75kg but its solid as a rock (more stable than my old compass which didnt have nose weight problems) and no i dont think ive just been lucky it did the round trip stafford to vendras this summer and was as good as gold thats 1800m plus about 1000 miles through the rest of the season so if it was going to play up i think id have seen it by now

Hi Chris
I had a similar problem with my xantia coachman530/4 combination. I moved the battery back about 3 feet by fitting it inside a plastic battery box under the front bench seat. I used some 16mm cable I already had to extend the battery connectors to the new battery position. It worked ok. I always intended to move it further back under the fixed bed with a new externaly accessed batery box but never got around to it as I changed my tow car to one with 100kg nose weight.
I hope there isn’t a problem with fitting a battery aft of the axle as I have just bought a Pegasus 534 which has the battery fitted under the fixed bed behind the axle.
Incidentally I contacted powrtouch about their recommended battery capacity and was advised that the best one from their perspective was an 85amp hour one. From what I can recall this was because it will recover quicker from being discharged back to an operational voltage.
happy new year
John

There are vans with batteries aft of the axle, our Hymer 545 had and its towing manners were exemplary.
There is no additional problem with the mover aft of the axle from a spray point of view; its certainly not immune to spray in front of the axle. Its also very much less vulnerable and the consequences of clipping it on a kerb are much much more minor [ it only gets knocked back; does not take out tyre plus possibly bend suspension as can happen if in front]. With the Powrtouch they sell a bracket to shift the spare wheel out of the way.
What with the spare moving back and the mover aft of the axle you might not need to think about moving the battery.
I only speak from 8 years of experience with absolutely no problems with a mover aft of the axle in just shy of 25,000 miles of towing throughout all seasons.

I don't see any problem from a weight distribution perspective in moving the battery behind the axle, provided it is close to the axle and not at the back of the van. In fact it would be preferable to to this rather than load up at the back to try and balance it out which will only increase the pendulum tendency.
As for manufacturers not putting batteries behind the axle, they did in ours...

The majority of companies that fit movers will normally ask you if you want the movers in front or behind the wheels, if you go for behind the wheel they will ask you if you want the spare spare wheel carrier moving back as they have can supply and fit brackets to do the job. If I remember right they are around &20 -£25, and move the carrier back about 30cm

Measure the horizontal distance from centre of wheel to centre of [battery] Say 1m
Measure the horizontal distance centre of wheel to [towhitch] Say 3m
Multiply battery weight by [battery] and divide by [towhitch] and that will give you the noseweight attributable to the battery.
Assuming 85AH battery weighs 20kg
20 x 1 / 3 = 6.66kg.
The problem is caused by weight much nearer the front of the van such as the gs cylinder.
If this video is your van it shows the battery already fairly close to the axle.

Our 2006 Bailey Pageant Bretagne has the battery mounted aft of the axle and, as other quotes on here, tows fine.

In my opinion the criteria for battery location is as low down as possible and as close to the axle as possible.
My battery box is immediately above the axle which is fantastic but because of the wheel arch it's a little on the high side. One of the reasons I chose a Bailey rather than a Lunar

Hi Chris, why not change the gas bottles to the lighter type gas ones, assuming that you have the heavy calor 7kilo bottles, i was surprised to find they weighed around 17lbs each when full, and I had two in the front locker, went for the lite gas(propane), and the bottle was half the weight of the blue bottle, you only get 6kilos of gas in the red bottle as apposed to 7kilos in the blue one, advantage of the propane is it still remains a gas at minus Zero, think the calor freezes at around six degrees or so, i have found that the weight i the locker is only 17lbs as apposed to the 32lbs i had before,if you have the lite gas bottles and nose weight still a bit high take them out and distrubute the weight securely in the van. John
