Hello all, we were new to caravanning last year and loved it. We have a 1998 swift classic corvette. My wife would love a small flat screen tv (I don't really but running out of birthday present ideas)
Does anyone have any recommendations? The caravan has a round a ariel thingy on the roof (miny ufo shape) but such if is any good.
We use a Makro cheapo flat-screen which we leave in the van. It is more that adequate for our needs and for less that a hundred quid (3 years ago, and they are all cheaper now) I couldn`t see the need for spending any more.
The aerial? Waste of time. Get one that works or better a satellite system.
I'd say be careful with a really cheap flat screen - just check that the viewing angle is good for you and that the contrast is ok. I've used the aerial you describe for years without any problem whatsoever and more recently with the digital signal without problems. I would recommend that you check that it has the connections wired correctly as there were stories that many had been incorrectly fitted - as was the case with two of my previous vans.
Our kids bought us a 17" Technika from Tesco - has freeview and DVD player. Only 126 pounds. It is especially for our new (April09) van but we have bought a booster indoor ariel and use it in the bed room when not away in the van. We kept the box so easy to transport and a big plus is it is so lightweight!! Hope this helps - we are not prepared to spend the earth on a caravan TV!!
I bought an integrated DVD, Freeview player and Idock all in one!

You don't say if you camp without EHU. If you need a dual voltage (12v or 240v) so you have the option of running off the battery you have a more restricted choice and will pay more.
We bought a cheapo one from Currys, absolutely fine. I found that the larger screen, we got a 19inch, gave a brighter picture for less money than the small ones and is much more watchable, especially in wide screen. There were also a lot more to choose from. More telly for your money!
You wil definitely need a proper aerial. We have an image aerial which clamps on to the awning rails. It gives a very good reception. Like the 420 & 430 here.
Avtex here too, run off a OneforAll brand indoor ariel from Argos, its the model with booster and adjustable gain, loop and 2 extendable radio type ariels on a base and cost around £20.
We are very pleased with this combination and can get freeview channels and digital Tv when in the right area.
The first Tv we tried was a MobileTv make, and was useless and got returned to the shop for an exchange for the Avtex.

We have also got the tesco tecknika lcd tv , dvd, freeview, very pleased with it.
Me too, the 15.4" inch one, it was on special offer of £97 when I got it last April - I use it in the bedroom here at home and just take it with me when I go away, it's light enough to pick up with one finger and I kept the box so it's easy to transport.

Hi James, any reasonably priced flat screen tv will do if you are on mains hook up
as for the aerial you have on your van it really depends on where you are in the country in some area,s they work really well in others they are about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike a good digital type aerial is needed, or you can go the satellite route some people may try to put you off this idea saying they are difficult to set up/find the right satellite etc dont be put off if you persevere you will get it right and have hundreds of channels to choose from, one of the easiest ways of doing this
is the new Easyfind system from Konig available from one of the sponsors of this
site Satgear and you will get a discount if you mention this site when ordering, this
system is also available on good old e bay for around a £100 for the complete system or £69 if you already have a dish and cable item no 220475577882
or their online shop theleisureworldshop (all one word) hope this helps you if you need advice on aerials or setting up contact me.
