It is complicated to some extent, but if you tell your insurance company before you need it you will find that they will cover your needs, It is like most things do not leave it to chance,
we have travelled abroad with our van for many years and always informed the insurance companys of what we are doing and never had a problem, and we have needed it on two occasions, We found M&S first class with the car and caravan guard the same with the van (a large twin axle) it has not cost us any more on the premiumand considerably less than the two main clubs. Our personal insurance is covered by our bank. M&S have one of the best foriegn travel car covers we have found as it covers more than one trip for more than 21 days.
I would you talk to your existing companys explain what you want and get them to confirm they cover it and what you need to carry with you just in case it is needed.
