Hello- this may have been asked many many times before....but still. We vent the windows in the summer by putting them on the second catch, but have the heating on in the van as the evenings get cooler, we go to bed and when we wake up the inside of our windows are very wet, why?? NO we do not leave the heating on (hubby doesn't like it) is this what we are doing wrong??? we close the blinds but when we open them everyone else around us wakes up to dry see through windows--not us. PLease can someone answer this for us. We mainly camp on THS's not on elec really. cheers gary
Presumably the wet is condensation, which (as I'm sure you know) is caused by moisture in the air (plus that added by people breathing, cooking etc) forming droplets on a cool surface. Heating the caravan will make it worse, as the temperature difference is greater. The easiest solution is to allow some ventilation.
Usually if we leave just one window in the "vent" position overnight that stops the problem. If you're leaving all your windows open a crack overnight in the summer and still suffering, it's rather peculiar.

If you are leaving windows open overnight perhaps the rain is getting in!
Usually the worst culprit for condensation is breathing but if your windows are open this should cure it. Ours are often wet but we close our windows & open in the morning to ventilate.
Thanks for all the replies you may have been a little mixed when reading--NO, NO DAMP, definatley, like viggo says it is more than likely just condensation due to breathing etc. The wife suffers from Arthiritis so leaving all the windows on vent is near impossible (she feels every draught) but we do try and leave one open. Our freind leaves his heiki roof on a vent and he has no probs but there are only 2 in their van, there are 3 in ours. cheers though all- i knew you would all help. gary
this time of year i do believe its a major problem for all because its so cold outside and the heating is on full.when its gets to bad at night i place towels under the windows to catch any run off of water, this way it does not spoil the van and polished surfaces.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
When I first moved onto my boat in 2001 it was autumn. Over the course of the following winter I was using a 13kg bottle of propane a week for the gas fire and everything was wet through, all the time. I just didn't realise how much water propane gas produces when it is used in heating. If you add to that cooking washing shower and perspiration it brings it into context. In the boating world any new gas fire installation needs to be of the balanced flue type. This method exhausts the burnt gases outside and the heat stays inside via a heat exchanger.
Our own solution (on the boat) was to fit a solid fuel stove. It cured the problem immediately. Obviously this is not practical in a caravan or RV, but there are ways that produce the same end result.
You could install a Webasto or Eberspacher diesel hot air system. Either of these blow 'dry' heat around, and are thermostatically controlled. Alternatively, if you are relying on a gas fire, change for a balanced flue type. Neither option is cheap though I'm afraid.
We use a de-humidifyer......never have any problem ..............does dry the air out though so if youre prone to getting coughs, maybe not a good idea.

THANK YOU ALL-- for all your comments.. Where can I get a dehumidifier that runs on batteries!!! we only camp non-elec all year round really. Only joking, really appreciate all what you have said, taken most bits on board and will try them out. Cheers to you all and happy camping/caravanning for 2010. thanks gary
Thanks all- will keep using the crystal moisture traps like we always have done. No electric on site and we don't keep the van at home so no power that way- but hey ho, will suss something somehow.. Cheers everyone. gary
