The damper tube should slide back allowing you to line the hole up with the end of the hitch damper, try putting a large block of wood over front of tube & push it back, it should slide fairly easily.

What you need is a ' Torx ' key to remove the bolts first but the question is what size? The best thing to do is locate a company first that deals with industrial tools and when you have found one, take out the bolt nearest to the towball hitch (DON'T remove the one furthest away from the coupling as this is supporting the damper spring) and take it to the tool shop and ask them for a Torx key to fit the bolt. They usually fit on the end of a ratchet very similar to how a socket fits so once you have one you can keep it just in case you ever need it again in the future.

how do you take the bolts out to take one to a shop to get the correct size when you dont have one??????

sugolly:  Wham! you copped me out, well I admit I must be a bit of a plonker not even thinking this. Sounds like a funny Irish joke!

When I removed my Alko hitch I can remember now that it wasn't a ' Torx ' bolt but a standard hexagonal bolt that's why I wasn't thinking straight. Sorry folks, I admit it was a mistake although it was quite funny.

I managed to (quite easily in the end) push the damper using the butt of a large screwdriver with a block of wood over the screwdriver end. I got my Dad to push the pin through the bolt hole once the damper end was in line...we actually did it at the first attempt! The Alko is now fitted along with security hitch. I even found time to fit a new carpet in the van afterwards...so a good day all round. Thanks all for your guidance and tips, it's much appreciated and really helped a newbie like me understand what I had to do to get out of this hole. Cheers.
