evening, i know bike carriers have been covered many times before but i wondered about rear bike carriers apposed to the a frame ones. For some reason i think i have read in the past that they may be illegal?????
i am looking at one like this
http://www.fiammastore.com/Fiamma-Carry-Bikes-For-Caravans/Fiamma-Carry-Bike-Caravan-Universal
Many thanks for any advice. I would use it both here and abroad.

They are not illegal, some might question putting weight on the rear end but plenty of Dutch caravanners use them. Some countries require you to tie a red/white striped marker board on them. You need to check your caravan has fixing points.

Thx for the advice. I am not too worried about nose weight as my Burstner is very sturdy and well balanced and the defender 90 pulls, and brakes like a dream.
I am hoping that i can fit x2 bikes on the A frame and x2 bikes on the back using the fiamma racks. This will equate to approx 30Kg (inc. bikes and rack) at each end. on the Fiamma webpage they show these items fitted to a Burstner caravan and mine seems to have the same fixing points already installed.
My lack of confidence in this potential set up is purely based on the lack of sighting this set up anywhere in the UK, i therefore assumed it was maybe illegal in the UK ????

Bought my caravan 4yrs ago and it had a twin bike carrier fitted on the back. Only ever carry sons bike on it but usually have a couple of wind breakers on there also. Never had a problem with stability but always load up carefully and check nose weight before i set off. My advice, go for it, you wont be dissapointed. Hope this helps.
I don't think it's illegal but I would be very wary of doing it. I know all the foreigners seem to carry bikes in this way, but I always think of the pendulum effect of that weight so far from the axle.
Also, you would need to be sure there were attachment points in the caravan back that were rated for the load.
You will need a lighting board - I can't see how you can put a bike on there without obscuring number plate and lights.
The bike rack sits above the lights & numberplate, it is a permanent fixture. I think most UK built 'vans have fixing points now, certainly German 'vans do & rear bike racks are popular with Dutch caravanners.
As with anything like this common sense has to prevail. A Dutch caravanner pointed out to me that the towing speed limit in Holland is 90kph(56mph)& he said Dutch caravanners with rear mounted bike racks towing in France at 70-80mph(legal at under 3.5t)were 'mad'.
thx again for your input. I agree with Tentz that common sense should prevail.
As i said earlier my Van really does seem bomb proof, especially when compared with my friends 06 Bailey Ranger. I don't want to open the UK / Euro van comparison "can of worms", as i defo think that people make their choices for personal reasons (the Ranger is far lighter than my Burstner and therefore cheaper to tow for example). BUT i wouldn't fit a bike rack to the back of a standard UK van as they have not been designed with that option in mind.
The Burstner paperwork i have with my van shows a Fiamma rack for the front and rear as an extra (Factory fitted) option, i therefore believe that the designers have designed the caravan with the weights and trundling stresses included.
As per the picture below - Fiamma seem to agree????
