Viggo,

You know what? I never buy food at the services - we take our own - because not only is it very expensive it's usually very poor. I do buy a drink, though, and use the shops.

Agree with you 100% with the food thing, plus drinks and shops are usually a bit pricey but ok overall.

When all is said and done I recon all us caravan people want is an easy to negociate car park, a food hall with acceptable quality and reasonable price plus loos that smell something like roses (not dead ones rofl). Oh - and some form of security to make sure our outfit is still there when we come back from our meal/drink. All of us on this thread all want these simple things.

Maybe some sort of petition to the 'big boys' who provide these service stations would make them re-think their ways. All our opinions on this forum need to be voiced to the guys and girls who operate our service stations. Then, with a bit of luck we can all afford to eat service station lasagne (or whatever lol) of a decent quality without spending a small fortune, and enjoy our rest from driving without the fear of our outfit being stolen in the car park!

Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!

I am sure it is illegal to use gas appliances on Motorway Service Areas. The consequences could be severe if there was an accident, so I would never risk it.

Also, I believe most MSAs prohibit the use of corner steadies.  I knowthis is the case at many areas, and so far I haven't seen anywhere it's allowed. You would need to check with each individual site to be certain, but the normal rule is no steadies.

Here's some interesting reading <---- CLICK LINK!

This policy came in in April 2008 - so MSA operators have had nearly two years to get their act together. Clearly, some are falling well short of the requirements NB: these are not actually legal requirements, just agreed requirements(!) and are not retrospective so don't apply to sites established before 2008 - however....

"Operators of both new and existing MSAs, whether leased from the Government or privately owned, must comply with the requirements of government policy. These provisions are reflected in the Traffic Signs Agreements into which they enter with the Highways Agency. If they do not observe these conditions, action can be taken which could ultimately lead to the closure of sites."

The policy states:

Parking for caravans, motorhomes and other light vehicles towing trailers

81.     Parking for caravans/motorhomes and other light vehicles towing trailers should not be located within the HGV parking area. A safe walking route from the parking area to the amenity building should be provided. Further, the parking area should not be situated such that manoeuvres cause a safety issue for other customers (see paragraphs 45 and 46). Parking bays should be laid out in a drive-through pattern so that caravan, motorhome and light vehicle trailer towing drivers are not required to reverse to exit.

82.     A minimum of two parking bays suitable for caravans/motorhomes and other light vehicles towing trailers should be situated close to the amenity building for the convenience of disabled users of such vehicles (see Annex B).

83.     Operators may provide overnight parking facilities for caravans and motorhomes. Facilities for the supply of fresh water, electrical hook-up and the disposal of foul and grey water may also be provided. However, caravans and motorhomes should not be permitted to stay on site for more than a maximum of twelve hours.

84.     Operators are also expected to provide parking for vehicles towing all types of trailer (including horseboxes and trailer tents).

On one services(northbound on the M6 near Stafford) you have to negoiate the HGV parking area on the way to the amenities. You also had to crossroads with traffic on.I found it quite scary.

I know the one you mean. Unless you want to use the shops, it's far easier to use the facilities in the fuel station - they have a little shop, a coffee shop and toilets, and it's much closer to the caravan parking area, in the opposite direction to the main facilities building. Once you know that, Stafford North is an excellent stopping point.

Oh this is very interesting...WE have been directed to park in the HGV areas more than once .

Only last week I emailed Gordano and they told me parking was clearly signed posted for the HGV park.

Hubby was up in Bristol area today and just told me he didn't see one caravan parking sign

We always stop on the HGV section southbound on the M5 at Frankley Services. Where else do you park? No clear signs.

Avoid Frankley - frankly, it's horrible. Either use Stafford South (which is really good), or go further on.
