hi iwas wondering was there any one on here that could give me some advice. me and my family borrowed a wee caravan a few times last year and enjoyed it so much we decided to buy our own for this year.

my cousin has offered me her 2002 hobby silverline 620 for £2500. I think this is pretty cheap but dont no a lot about caravans or towing. We drive a 1.6 astra and are not too sure if our car will pull the caravan.

basically i need to know, 1, is that a good price for the caravan and 2, if our car wont pull it what size of car would we need

that is one big van if it is 8ft wide it is a comercial trailer so do you have a hgv licence. and it it way to heavy for an astra you need to find out how big it is and how heavy it is. the trailer should not exceed 85% of the weight of the tow car for stability

WellI found one 2003 at £4200 on an auction so yes I think it's cheap but it is a big bu**er!

you are going to need some sort of large 4x4 to tow it and may well go over the 3500kg threshold for driver licencing.

I think your car might be alright for following behind with the awning!

If you want to keep your astra you need to think MUCH smaller in terms of caravan.

Good luck

either way it is a 8ft wide trailer its not a 4x4 you need its a transit van with some gardening logo on the side and you will have to practice saying in your best irish accent DO YOU WONNA BUY A DOG

So long as you don't tow it before April then a 4x4 or large car will be ok on a standard towing licence

There was a 2003 one on Ebay, ended 1/2/10 at £3800 but reserve was not met. It is 1950kg  gross weight and over 7'6" wide. At the moment it can only be towed in Britain by a goods vehicle over 3500kg. It will be bought by someone who will keep it on a permanent site.

http://www.practicalcaravan.com/legal/index.html

MTPLM
The maximum weight of the caravan, as stated by the manufacturer (pre-1998 caravans: MGW, or Maximum Gross Weight).

I think that's a very wise decision Dixie. Even if you got something big enough to tow it, it would cost a fortune in fuel.

Its not so much the width but the length that would concern me (oooh matron).  It would take more than an astra to tow a twin axle Hobby.  Ours is a single axle 540  but its a heavy brute although very stable to tow.  Lucky we already had our old Trooper and the Merc tows it like a dream too.  They are gorgeous, well built, all weather caravans and it sounds like a great bargain.   The great disadvantage (and I see you're from Co Down Dixie) is that certain of our 'itinerant' communities adore them due to their all year round living capabilities.  So prepare to be treated wherever you go as if you're trying to sell tarmac or plastic guttering.  Our solution in Ireland is to: tow with the merc, wear gucci, hermes scarves and Hunter wellies; dress the dogs in barbour jackets and cover the caravan with National Trust stickers.  Oh yes and say Yah Yah Dahling a lot.
