I am sure i watched a caravan programme on tv called caravan sights, and on there one of the more expensive manufacturers will change whatever you do not like in a particular layout, be it colour, materials, furniture type and size, fixtures and their positions etc. but i bet the cost will reflect this level of 'modification'! Doing it yourself could potentially mean you end up with a poor weight distribution, and therefore a bad to tow van. But i recon if you stick to heavy stuff near the axle, and lighter stuff at either ends of the van you could quite easily design your own. Seems to me the best place for a kitchen is in the middle of the van, with lounge/beds/washrooms going at either end. Maybe email the big manufactureres and ask for their advice. They may well ignore you, but if they reply it may save you building your 'perfect to camp in, but worst in the world to tow' van.
------------- Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!

I think it would be great to do this, maybe if a van was available as shell and you could pick a mix but I expect the price would be astronomicial!

We thought the layout of the winning caravan was lovely with masses of storage, we actually measured up our drive to see if we could get one in with enough room to get the cars around it but it was just too long.
The Pageant Brambler had its name changed to the Pageant Ardennes. We were talking about it with the salesman up at the dealers this afternoon & he told us it was no longer being made. It'll be interesting to see if any come on the market second hand.

We moved to a caravan after many happy years as tent campers, and whilst the caravan is great when the weathers bad, I wasn't happy using it in the summer.
I liked the idea of sleeping with solid walls,some storage for clothes, and basics and having a good galley set up .
This used to be a 20+ft caravan:
Here's a link to the build photos;

It's had a few changes over the last 2 years including a new roof after resin failiure,and an aluminium skin to protect it.
Then there's my second build....
Here's the build album from concept to completion.

I'm currently working on number 3, It's a lot like the first one, with a few tweeks here and there. I'm building this one inside the donor caravan, and will have to cut it out when it's complete. It's ment I can build over the winter, as I don't have a workshop and the others have been built on the drive. I've sold off the stuff that I don't need to help pay for the build.

I hope you like them, but I know they aren't for everybody.
Dave
