Generally best to face east as the wind in this country mostly comes from a westerly direction. This avoids strong wind blowing directly into your awning. If you face south you will retain the sun the longest & avoid cold winds blowing into your awning. Its good to have a compass when pitching up.
If we can we try to face the front of the caravan south so that we get sun in through the front window this means that the awning is facing east I suppose!
johnks - very well said, we've had some lovely sun yesterday and today but boy what a cold wind and also a few snow/hail showers. I just want some pleasantly warm sunshine.
As for which way to pitch awning - we always look for a pitch that gives some sun either early or late. If its warm and sunny we would be outside awnyway and not in the awning!
The first thing I do when arriving on a site is to look at which way the trees bend, you can then usually work out which side to put your awning so that it gets the least battering from any wind
Early morning sun, its cracking for when you have your cuppa and it also helps to make sure its dry when putting away.
------------- Enjoying caravanning, realising what an expensive hobby it is and spending the family’s inheritance before they can get their hands on it!

Don't Know about anbody else its not the positioning of the caravan that the problem its getting a pitch in the first place, on site you want.
As for us Its a case of stop, un -hitch, setup van, get wine out enjoy, move chairs to follow sun if need be. Lifes too short to worry about the wind direction and best sun during the day.

enjoy thats whats caravanning is all about.
Maybe life's too short to have to sit in the shade or chase your awning down the campsite at 3am on a gale-blown morning. Some people do actually enjoy planning, you know!
