Depends how much you are talking. If we are looking at something for £200 than I would not have a problem offering £150.

If its something for £10,000 then I might start at £8750.

Depends also how much you want it etc.

I would stop worrying about offending - you are not looking to become best mates. Put in a silly offer - they can come down you can go up. You may meet in the middle.

Offer what YOU think it's worth.

I bought my little Fisher Holivan at the end of last year. It was advertised for £595 and I drove 55 miles to go and see it. I said I was only prepared to pay £450 and if they weren't happy with my offer I was prepared to walk away.
The seller accepted!!!

At the end of the day, something is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay.

Start with a low offer, less than most you will pay. They say no. You say what's the lowest you would take then. They say a price. You haggle by coming up a bit and them coming down a bit until you meet between your original offer and their lowest price.

They feel they've got you up from your original offer, you are paying what you are happy with. Both of you are happy. Don't forget, they want to sell every bit as much, if not more than, you want to buy.
