What sort of rates have you been quoted? The shortest route, town to town is 441 miles. Considering the insurance would have to be right & the running costs these days, you'll not get it done cheap. There's several firms advertising on Ebay, one based in Gloucester seems to have all the required paperwork & experience. It'd be interesting to hear the prices you've had so far.

Considering where you are, a haulier taking vans from a manufacturer like Bailey in Bristol up to Scotland would be a good bet for you to get a back haul rate. A visit to a local bailey dealer & a chat with someone in the workshop might get you a phone number. Alternatively give Forest of dean caravan transport a call. They may go up there with vans.  http://www.forestofdeancaravans.co.uk/

Ellis transport based in Cambridge Glos take tractors & plant all over the country, they've got the right sort of lorries to load a caravan on & may well be interested in a back load to South Wales. Probably still wouldn't be cheap though but well worth a call. http://www.ellistransportltd.co.uk/default.htm

I'm a haulage contractor, but don't carry caravans, from my point of view, there's no difference going up to Montrose get a load such as your caravan than taking a load up to Montrose & coming back empty. The job is priced accordingly & depending on whether or not your caravan collection can tie in with a lorry/tow vehicle being there & looking for a load heading back south west will determine the cost to you.

Hello Modge

The two links I've posted may be of use, one of them delivers all sizes of plant & machinery all over the UK & the other delivers caravans.

I ran my postcode & a Montrose postcode over a towing service pricer & got a price around £550. I couldn't belive there's only a couple of miles difference from my place & Abercarn from Montrose on shortest route. They wouldn't be making a lot of money out of that to go & get it but a haulier might be glad to bring it down on a homeward bound trip for a lot less. Best of luck with it.

If your towcar is too small, hiring a van for a couple of days and fetching it yourself would work out a lot cheaper.

That is amost a 1000 mile round trip and probably a two day trip! In my 3 litre diesel 4 x 4 fuel alone would cost about £270 so if some one has quoted £350 it will be a bargain.
Pay all my costs incl overnight stay and something for my time and I may consider the job as I am sitting at home totally bored at present as jobs in my line fo work are very scarce. It will help pass the time.

First time I've heard of uship, looks like a site which auctions your job, is it a bit like a clearing house set up where vetted firms compete on price for the listed jobs? It'll be interesting to see how the move goes.

Do be careful.  Getting this service too cheap could be a false economy.  If it's less that £350 it probably doesn't even cover the fuel.  The real price would be very much more.

You would be much better hiring a van and doing it yourself.

Based on the figures I gave you £350 is way too cheap and I would be very wary. Closer to £500 would find a reputable company.

Quite right Surfer.  When I was doing this professionally, I used to charge £1 per mile, so even if you get someone who is based ast one end of the route you must be looking at £500 at least.  Remember, they have very expensive insurance to pay for, as well as all the expenses that come with the tachograph. (With any large 4 x 4 and a medium sized caravan, you need a tachograph for professional use.)

It's one of those areas where you really don't want to be saving money.

It just isn't possible to do it for £350, but now apparently there's a cheaper quote.  I wouldn't go anywhere near it.  Just hire a vehicle, or find a friend who will do it for cost.

thanks for all your comments, i have secured some transport from a reputable haulier in sheffeild, since then i have had a few more quotes at £300. to £320 off other

transporters. work must be hard to get and there must be some genuine hauliers out there ,i hopefully have found not such a greedy one with a return trip.ive checked the company and its insured for up to £20,000.that covers my £2000 van.

i will leave details after delivery

Well done Modge, obviously a haulier wil be prepared to do a load homeward bound for less than a haulier will work one way. That's why I suggested you look on the websites I posted links for, they're hauliers covering the UK & would work on a return load basis the same as the contractor you've found simply because their vehicles are constructed to do a certain sort of job & have a limited field to source return load work from. It'll be interesting to see how the job's done & I hope it goes well for you.
