Hiya, I am away at the moment. We had to use chocks for the 1st time yesterday. When we tried to un-hitch the car, we couldn't wind the jockey wheel up high enough (cause of the chocks) to get it to come off the tow ball. My OH had to lift the caravan off which was hard cause our caravan is heavy.
I am now worried about getting the caravan BACK onto the tow ball cause we're not going to wind the jockey wheel high enough. Hope I've made sense......

If both wheels are on chocks why not put some more either in front or behind to make a ramp and manually push the caravan off? Put them in front and you can use the handbrake to slow the caravan's descent.

Why don't you put a brick or some wood under the jockey wheel that way you will get some more height. I assume all 4 legs are down?
Just undo the clamp on the jockey wheel so you can slide it up to get the wood or the brick under.
Hi.I'm just trying to work out the scenario. When its time to hitch up again, can you not put a block of wood under the jockey wheel to give it extra height?

If, like ours, the jockey wheel is in the middle of the A frame then you still have a problem.
If it clamps on to the side of the frame, then its a good idea.

Just roll it off the the blocks & yank the handbrake on once its off. I can't work out why you have both wheels on chocks, if the ground slopes away sideways you only need to chock one wheel. Its good to carry several wood blocks for putting under jockey wheel & corner steadies on uneven ground.
As things stand now with caravan parked & corner steadies down, find a brick/breeze block/wood block, wind up jockey wheel & place brick(s) underneath, then the hitch will wind up high enough for you to back tow ball under. Lifting the front of a caravan is a good way to do your back in. Avoid.
Hi all thanks for replying. Only one wheel is in the chock. We had to put a brick under one rear leg too. We didn't come very prepared to be honest. (still quite a newbie). So we didn't have anything but the chocks. No bricks chunks of wood etc. We've been looking at what everybody else on the site are using.

Hi. I am sure the site warden (manager) will sort you. They were most helpful last time we stayed there. Dont be afraid to ask for advice of the site manager. Theirs is the only one I would trust.Good luck.
Chocks under the jockey wheel or just roll it off using the handbrake all sound good to me. I always have some lumps of wood in the van to help with these occasions.
If it's an adjustable jockey wheel, before you first lower it to raise the caravan, adjust the position so the wheel is nearly in contact with the ground. Don't just wind it down from its travelling position.
I tend to think you have just started to wind, and that's why you don't have enough travel.
In your present position, with the steadies down, wind the wheel up as far as it will go. Loosen the clamp and lower the wheel nearly to the ground. You should find you have enough travel.
Don't be afraid to ask someone on site. Most people are very helpful, and what might seem like a big problem to you will just be something they have seen before and can deal with.
Before you know it, you'll be the one giving advice.
if you are worried about rolling back place an object about 12 inches behind the base of the ramp.a bolder / rock or a spare wheel from the car or van.the will capture the van as it rolls off.i had to do this one time.do it to both wheels and then the van will not twist round.
