Seen an ad for an ABI ACE caravan, has been serviced and is in good condition, however they have stated it needs a new water heater, are these expensive to replace or shold we look elsewhere.

Probably cost about £150 to replace unit but it may only be a part that needs replacing. Would ask first before committing to buy.

There maybe not be a problem, however we are looking to buy our first van, better to be safe than sorry, can do without the sacry comments.

I agree. Upfront to tell you they had a problem, so negotiate the replacement in the price. But true, it may only need repair. Sounds nice. Good luck.

An ABI would be old enough to have a Carver Cascade 2 which are no longer available although they can be repaired (arc systems) or second hand ones sourced (between £50 & £250 depending on type and time of buying). The Henry is a direct new replacement costing around £375, a little known make is the Propex Malaga which has a conversion plate, again around £375 new or of course the Truma from £475

Thank you for this, quite an expensive layout then as they have the van advertised for £2000, and it is '93, they haven't disclosed the actual model just ABI ACE, as yet we haven't call about it, just finding out if it was worth enquiring with the noted fault.

New replacement for that old favourite and reliable workhorse. Designed along the same principles as the very familiar Cascade GE, this unit relies on 21st century electronics, a bigger heating element, and a new safer exhaust flue design, to bring hot water to your leisure vehicle, whilst taking up the minimum of space. 9 litres of hot water can be kept at 70 C, enough to power a shower or family washing and can be warmed up to temperature in less than 25 minutes. The Henry-GE is installed through the wall so that only the flue is visible from the outside.It has a slim shape for the narrowest of spaces, is easy to install and maintain, and comes at a very competitive price. Most parts also compatible with the Carver Cascade GE, alleviating concerns in the future over parts availability. Please note that the burner module is not compatible with the Carver wall switch and the Carver burner module is not compatible with the Henry wall switch. Gas/230V. 940W element.

It will indeed be a Carver Cascade mk2 water heater, what you could do then is ask what he 'thinks' is wrong with it?


If he can give some clues then I can suggest the possible costs of repair

are they focusing your attention on the heater to hide a damp problem? double check for damp as the heater can possibly be repaired.ie has the caravan had a damp test as part of service? this would be my first question.

For a 1993 model, (and a private sale?) with a duff heater, is it not rather expensive?

Have you checked the weight too?

I thought £2000 seemed a bit over the top for a 1993 van unless it is in exceptionally good condition and that's not taking the water heater into consideration. You also need to be extra vigilant with vans of that age regarding damp as the dry ones are the exception not the norm. Given the heater could set you back over £400 with fitting I suggest this is probably one to walk away from.

I'd want to know what size and layout the van is. It may be totally unsuitable for you.
