Hi,
We're talking at the moment with friends about buying a new caravan together. it would be kept at our address but they would make use of it when required, and we would share costs/maintenance etc. Does anyone know if there are any insurmountable difficulties with insurance etc with an arrangement like this?
thanks
John
I wouldnt know about actual caravan insurance problems but as motor insurance goes,as long as you're both insured to tow on individual policies then you should be fine.

One of the insurance quotes we got automatically covered our friends and family using the caravan too so I'm sure it would be fine as long as you got a policy like that. I expect you'd need to have the ownership and policy in just your name.

hi, that's encouraging. do you remember who the provider was?
cheers
We share our caravan with the in-laws, it makes maintainance, insurance and of course the initial purchase of the caravan more affordable. We are insured in my name with the Caravan club and the policy covers family and freinds to use the caravan with our permission, it would perhaps be worth giving them a ring and explaining your situation.. I think buying a caravan with family or friends is a good idea as long as you don't fall out!
We used to share a static, it was a family share thing & we were all supposed to have access to it when we wanted & were going to share the fortune it was going to make.
Reallity was, several of us seemed to want to use it at the same time. Some wanted to upgrade it when the rest of us didn't. One wanted to let a friend use it because they were down on thier luck, they had it for a week & wrecked the thing.
We pulled out & bought a tourer, it's for our own use & is always there when we want it. We'd never even consider a share situation with our caravan.
It might sound an attractive proposition but I would get EVERYTHING in writing.
Things you need to consider are: * where it will be kept * who will have access to it * who can use it * when it will be used and for how long * who is responsible for any damage caused * what happens if one of you wants to sell or you fall out * who pays for servicing, maintenance, repairs, insurance * what happens if you both want to use at the same time
Don't want to put a downer on your idea - I just want you to be secure from a legal stand point IN CASE something happens and the arguements start. If you've got everything agreed in writing (both parties have a copy and it is signed and dated) then you're less likely to have problems.
